For the first time since the early 1980s, Cathay Pacific has reintroduced narrowbody aircraft to its passenger fleet, launching the advanced Airbus A321neo on key regional routes from its Hong Kong hub to cities like Shanghai, Nanjing, and Taipei.
The highly anticipated debut flight took off between Hong Kong and Shanghai Pudong on August 4th, marking a new chapter in Cathay Pacific's short-haul strategy. The A321neo accommodates 202 travelers, including an exclusive 12-seat Business Class section featuring the airline's latest "Regional Business Class" recliner, arranged in a refined 2-2 layout over three rows.
Business Class guests can expect an elevated experience with ergonomically designed hard-shell recliners, privacy partitions, and a tranquil, "cocoon-inspired" ambiance. The premium cabin is complemented by gourmet meal presentations, seamless Bluetooth connectivity, multiple charging ports, and high-speed Wi-Fi access. Each seat is equipped with a cutting-edge 15.6-inch 4K entertainment screen, ensuring an immersive journey.
"Welcoming the A321neo to our fleet underscores our commitment to delivering a world-class, short-haul product," shared CEO Augustus Tang. "This next-generation aircraft is tailored to offer unparalleled comfort and innovation for our regional passengers. As we expand our A321neo operations, we look forward to delighting guests with a new standard of service across Asia."
Originally, the A321neo was scheduled to enter service under the Cathay Dragon brand in 2020, but the transition was delayed by the global pandemic and the subsequent integration of Cathay Dragon into the Cathay Pacific portfolio. As of 2025, Cathay Pacific operates four A321neos, with additional aircraft set to join the fleet, supporting its regional connectivity strategy.
Earlier this year, we reported that Singapore Airlines has also enhanced its narrowbody offering, following the integration of SilkAir. Notably, their new Business Class features fully flat-bed seats, raising the bar in regional premium travel. While Cathay’s A321neo Business Class utilizes luxurious recliners rather than flat beds, the overall onboard product remains among the most sophisticated in Asia’s short-haul market.
