Since 1958, Japan Airlines (JAL) has been instantly recognizable by its iconic tsurumaru or “crane circle” livery, a symbol that reflects the airline’s enduring values of loyalty and resilience. The stylized red-crowned crane, encircling its head with outstretched wings, was briefly retired but triumphantly returned to the JAL fleet in 2011, reaffirming the brand’s heritage and commitment to excellence.
Now, Japan Airlines—often referred to as Nikko—has elevated its inflight experience with an exclusive suite of amenities inspired by the tsurumaru motif. Renowned Japanese design studio Nendo was entrusted with reimagining both domestic and international amenity kits, blending contemporary aesthetics with deep respect for Japanese tradition. Nendo’s vision centers around the origami crane, an enduring emblem of peace and hospitality, translated into elegant geometric patterns and subtle design cues throughout the product range.
Passengers will notice refined details: blankets, napkins, and table linens are adorned with minimalist red triangles evoking the crane’s head, while subtle red tags accent pillows, pajamas, sleep masks, slippers, and cutlery holders. Amenity pouches, meal trays, and menu cards showcase understated origami crane prints, lending a sense of artistry and calm to the cabin environment.
The color palette is meticulously curated—seven shades of grey, from a sumptuous deep grey for First Class to a soft, airy hue for Economy, with a sophisticated mid-tone for Business Class. This gradient not only differentiates each cabin but also creates a seamless, modern visual language. Essentials such as masks, earplugs, tissues, and toothbrushes are presented in a versatile neutral grey, ensuring a cohesive and upscale presentation in every class of service.
These Nendo-designed amenities have quickly become sought-after among discerning travelers, admired not only for their functionality but also for their collectible design appeal. During our recent journeys aboard JAL, the thoughtful attention to detail and tactile luxury of these amenities stood out, underscoring the airline’s reputation for world-class hospitality.
