British Airways sells Carbon Removal Credits to passengers

British Airways now empowers its passengers to directly contribute to climate action by purchasing carbon removal credits, enabling travelers to play an active role in extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

This innovative offering, available through British Airways' enhanced carbon mitigation platform, complements the airline’s existing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) purchase options. Both corporate and leisure customers can now select from purchasing SAF, supporting certified carbon offset projects, or investing in carbon removal credits to help neutralize the environmental impact of their flights.

Whereas carbon offset initiatives focus on preventing, reducing, or sequestering additional CO2 emissions, carbon removal credits are specifically designed to permanently eliminate carbon dioxide from the air or interrupt its recirculation in the carbon cycle.

Recognized by global regulatory bodies and leading climate scientists as essential in the pathway to net zero, carbon removal solutions are rapidly gaining traction. British Airways currently partners with two rigorously verified projects, offering passengers a transparent avenue to address their personal carbon footprints and accelerate the scale-up of this crucial sector.

The Blue Carbon Mangrove Project, located in Pakistan’s Indus Delta, restores and revitalizes degraded tidal wetland ecosystems. By replanting mangroves across approximately 225,000 hectares—an expanse twice the size of Los Angeles—the project captures atmospheric carbon through natural photosynthesis, boosting biodiversity and supporting local communities.

Meanwhile, the Freres Biochar Initiative in Oregon, USA, transforms agricultural and forestry residues into biochar via advanced biomass energy processes. The resulting carbon-rich material effectively stores carbon for centuries, preventing its release into the atmosphere. Beyond its climate benefits, biochar enhances soil health and has promising applications in water filtration, contributing to sustainable agriculture.

British Airways remains firmly committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with the latest industry benchmarks and international climate agreements.
