Emirates, a global leader in premium air travel, has commenced the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on select departures from London Heathrow Airport, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to environmentally responsible aviation.
In partnership with Shell Aviation, Emirates has secured over 3,000 tonnes of pure SAF—its largest single procurement to date—which will be blended with conventional jet fuel and integrated into Heathrow’s fuel infrastructure throughout the 2025 summer schedule.
This initiative represents Emirates’ inaugural use of SAF at London Heathrow and underscores the airline’s active participation in the airport’s SAF Incentive Programme, an effort designed to enhance the accessibility and cost-effectiveness of SAF for all carriers operating at the hub.
Emirates maintains stringent oversight of its SAF supply chain at Heathrow, employing advanced tracking systems and transparent documentation to ensure all sustainability credentials are meticulously recorded. The SAF is efficiently distributed via the airport’s existing fuel network, compatible with all current aircraft engines. When used in its purest form, SAF can deliver up to an 80% reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions compared to traditional jet fuel.
Beyond London, Emirates now operates SAF-powered flights from key European gateways including Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon, and Oslo. The airline achieved a historic milestone by collaborating with Shell Aviation to supply SAF directly into Dubai International Airport’s fuelling system, and is expanding its sustainable fuel initiatives to Singapore Changi Airport in partnership with local suppliers.
Industry momentum for SAF continues to grow: Virgin Atlantic’s recent transatlantic flight using 100% SAF demonstrated the viability of next-generation fuels, with the airline reaffirming: “If you make it, we will fly it.”
