Finnair is taking sustainability to new heights by repurposing its decommissioned crew uniforms into robust outdoor furniture, including contemporary planters, benches, and tables. This innovative upcycling initiative reflects the airline’s ongoing commitment to eco-conscious practices and circular design.
Uniform pieces that remain in excellent condition are rejuvenated and redistributed for staff use. However, garments that have reached the end of their lifecycle are delivered to Image Wear, a leading Finnish workwear producer based in Hankkio. With decades of expertise since its founding in the 1960s, Image Wear processes the old uniforms by shredding the textiles and blending them with recycled plastic granules, producing a high-performance composite material suitable for outdoor environments.
According to Merja Lindberg, Finnair’s Uniform Manager, the airline prioritizes durability and timeless style in its uniform design, enabling garments to be refreshed and reused for years. This strategy aligns with Finnair’s broader vision for responsible resource management and waste reduction.
The current cabin crew uniforms, designed by Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen and introduced in 2011, are distinguished by their refined palette of deep blue and crisp white, embodying both Scandinavian minimalism and functionality.
