Lufthansa & Meta to offer onboard Virtual Reality

In a groundbreaking move for the aviation industry, Lufthansa, in partnership with Meta, is rolling out the Meta Quest 3 headset for select passengers in its flagship Allegris Business Class Suite. This marks the debut of commercial VR headsets onboard, setting a new benchmark for luxury air travel.

Meta’s innovative Travel Mode, now available on both Meta Quest 2 and 3, transforms the headset into a sophisticated in-flight entertainment platform. Travelers can immerse themselves in a virtual theater, participate in interactive games, meditate with guided experiences, or even handle work tasks—all within an ergonomic, travel-optimized device that eliminates the need for traditional neck support.

Starting this summer, guests in Lufthansa’s Business Class Suite on selected long-haul routes will enjoy exclusive VR features, including:

  • Blockbuster films and popular series on a panoramic virtual cinema screen
  • Immersive audio journeys with leading travel podcasts, enhanced by spatial video and 360-degree content
  • Virtual destination tours offering aerial previews and interactive sightseeing before landing
  • Classic and multiplayer games such as Chess and Connect Four, reimagined in virtual reality
  • Wellbeing experiences, from active meditation sessions to relaxing, immersive environments

The Meta Quest automatically recognizes onboard Wi-Fi, guiding users to connect seamlessly and access both Lufthansa’s curated entertainment library and Meta’s exclusive VR offerings.

Advanced motion-adaptive technology ensures a stable, comfortable VR experience, even during turbulence or when gazing out the window—an industry first for in-flight VR.

This pilot initiative, launching in partnership with Lufthansa, leverages the airline’s established expertise in extended reality, previously used in crew training and brand marketing. As Björn Becker, Head of Future Intercontinental Experience at Lufthansa Group, states: “By collaborating with Meta, we are pioneering a new era of in-flight entertainment, delivering transformative experiences for our guests.”

Meta’s vision for Travel Mode extends beyond aviation, with plans to expand to trains and other premium travel environments in the near future.
