For travelers seeking to minimize their carbon footprint, the Lufthansa Group has introduced Green Fares, marking a significant milestone as the industry’s first airline alliance to embed sustainability directly into its fare structure. The Green Fares initiative is designed for passengers who prioritize responsible travel, offering an effortless way to offset flight-related CO₂ emissions.
With each Green Fare ticket, travelers support climate action through a blend of 20% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) usage and 80% investment in certified environmental projects. This blend represents the latest standard for eco-forward air travel in 2025, as SAF adoption continues to expand across the aviation sector.
Added value is woven into the Green Fares proposition: customers receive bonus status miles and complimentary rebooking flexibility. In Business Class, the ‘business green’ fare matches the ‘business flex’ price, but uniquely includes carbon offsetting, 20% extra award miles, and 20% status miles. While the Green Fare is non-refundable, the Flex option allows full refunds and same-day flight changes, subject to availability.
Green Fares are now available across over 730,000 flights annually within Europe and to key North African destinations, including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Edelweiss, Eurowings Discover, and Air Dolomiti all participate, making this one of the most comprehensive sustainable fare offerings in the world. The initiative enhances Lufthansa Group’s established fare structure, which has evolved since 2015 to reflect traveler preferences and environmental imperatives.
In line with its robust climate protection strategy, the Lufthansa Group is on track to achieve net-zero CO₂ emissions by 2050, with a medium-term target to halve net emissions by 2030 compared to 2019, leveraging both emission reductions and advanced compensation initiatives.
