The resurgence of international air travel has sparked fierce competition between the region’s premier airlines. As Air New Zealand celebrates robust demand and prepares for its highly anticipated non-stop Auckland to New York flights, Qantas has made a bold move—reintroducing its own premium service to New York, this time with a stopover in Auckland.
Air New Zealand’s renowned ultra-long-haul Auckland–New York route, operating with the fuel-efficient Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, has become a flagship option for luxury travellers. With flights departing three times weekly, passengers enjoy a seamless journey of nearly 16 hours northbound and just over 17.5 hours on the return, ranking among the world’s lengthiest non-stop flights. Convenient connections to Sydney add approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes, making this an attractive gateway for Australasia to the US East Coast.
Qantas’s return to the New York market—now operating three times weekly—has elevated transpacific travel by introducing more choice and competition for discerning flyers. This rivalry between two national icons translates into improved cabin experiences, more availability, and competitive fares for the premium segment.
Qantas has also significantly increased its Australia–Auckland frequencies, now offering up to 11 daily flights from Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, timed to optimise onward connections to New York. The airline’s investment in its Dreamliner fleet continues, with additional aircraft joining in 2025. Simultaneously, Qantas is rolling out a multi-million-dollar upgrade of its flagship lounges, including expansive new spaces in Adelaide, Auckland, Port Hedland, and Rockhampton, promising an elevated pre-flight experience for premium travellers.
Looking ahead, Qantas’s order for the ultra-long-range Airbus A350-1000s underpins the ambitious ‘Project Sunrise’, set to debut in late 2025. This project will see the introduction of the world’s longest direct flights, linking Sydney and Melbourne with both London and New York, redefining the boundaries of luxury air travel and positioning Qantas at the forefront of ultra-long-haul innovation.
For alliance-minded travellers, Qantas maintains its position in oneworld, while Air New Zealand remains a key member of Star Alliance.
