SAS has officially ended its longstanding partnership with Star Alliance as of August 31st, marking a significant shift in the landscape of global airline alliances. From September 1st, SAS is beginning its integration with SkyTeam, although the airline has not yet announced the precise date when it will achieve full SkyTeam member status.
Starting September 1st, SAS EuroBonus members will begin to experience a suite of loyalty rewards closely aligned with those previously available through Star Alliance, now extended across most SkyTeam carriers. EuroBonus members will continue to accrue Basic points on the majority of SkyTeam-operated flights, ensuring that frequent flyers retain strong earning potential during the transition.
The transformation follows a sweeping corporate restructuring, with Air France-KLM—one of SkyTeam's founding partners—acquiring a significant equity stake in SAS. This strategic partnership is designed to enhance SAS’s global network reach and service proposition.
SAS has invested over half a year preparing for this alliance shift. As part of the transition, EuroBonus Silver members are set to receive enhanced benefits such as additional checked baggage and priority check-in with many SkyTeam airlines. Meanwhile, EuroBonus Gold and Diamond members will enjoy premium privileges including airport lounge access, expedited security lanes, and priority boarding—benefits that align with SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus status.
At present, SAS has refrained from specifying the complete list of SkyTeam airlines participating in these reciprocal arrangements, instead referencing "most" partner airlines in their latest official communications.
For EuroBonus members, there is a grace period until September 8th to retroactively claim missing points for Star Alliance flights flown up to August 31st. This ensures that loyal customers do not miss out on rewards earned during the final days of the previous alliance membership.
SAS has indicated that it will provide further updates about the transition process and additional details regarding new partner benefits over the coming months.
SkyTeam continues to be a powerhouse in the airline alliance space, connecting over 437 million travelers annually through more than 10,770 daily departures, serving 1,050 destinations across 166 countries worldwide.
The alliance's prestigious roster includes Aerolíneas Argentinas, Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air France, China Airlines, China Eastern, Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Garuda Indonesia, ITA Airways, Kenya Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air, Middle East Airlines, Saudia, TAROM, Vietnam Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and XiamenAir.
