SWISS trials AI for passenger counts

SWISS has introduced an innovative three-month pilot program utilizing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to automate passenger counting during boarding. Conducted on select Zurich departures from April to June, this digital upgrade is designed to enhance safety, streamline boarding, and reduce the cabin crew’s administrative burden.

For the duration of the trial, discreet cameras were temporarily positioned within the aircraft cabin to record boarding activity. These video feeds were exclusively used to teach the AI system to differentiate between passengers, including those carrying infants, and to adapt to various lighting scenarios. The AI’s accuracy and consistency were rigorously monitored and fine-tuned throughout the period. To ensure operational reliability, traditional manual headcounts by cabin crew continued alongside the AI-driven process on all test flights.

All travelers on affected flights received advance notice about the experimental technology before boarding. Following the conclusion of the trial, SWISS conducted a comprehensive analysis of its findings to determine whether a broader rollout of AI-powered passenger counting would be implemented across its network.
