Review of Garuda Indonesia Business Class

Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia’s flagship carrier, has been connecting the world’s largest archipelago since 1949. Today, the airline operates more than 600 flights daily, linking over 90 destinations across Indonesia’s 17,500-plus islands and select international gateways. Its robust domestic network is a lifeline for the country’s sprawling geography, with frequent flights among the major islands and to remote regional airports.

Operating from its primary hub at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Garuda maintains a comprehensive schedule within Indonesia and the Asia-Pacific. Internationally, the airline serves key Asian cities and maintains links to Australia—flying to Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. As of 2025, Garuda’s only European destination remains Amsterdam, offering a direct connection between Southeast Asia and the Netherlands.

The airline’s history is as dynamic as Indonesia itself. Founded during the struggle for independence, Garuda has weathered both periods of rapid growth and challenging setbacks. Following a period of safety concerns that led to bans in the US and EU, Garuda undertook a sweeping transformation dubbed “The Quantum Leap.” This initiative modernized its fleet, reimagined the brand, and prioritized world-class onboard service. These efforts paid off, with bans lifted and Garuda earning recognition among global aviation’s elite, including five-star ratings from Skytrax and multiple accolades for service excellence.

Garuda’s name and branding are inspired by the mythical Garuda—half-man, half-bird—an emblem of Indonesia’s national identity. The airline’s livery features elegant feather motifs, a nod to this revered symbol found in ancient temples across the country.

The GarudaMiles loyalty program features four tiers: Blue, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Members accrue miles when flying Garuda or SkyTeam partners, redeemable for award flights or upgrades. Notably, awards are transferable to friends, family, or colleagues, and children aged 2-11 can join GarudaMiles Junior to start earning early.

As a full SkyTeam member, Garuda Indonesia gives travelers access to over 15,000 daily flights across 19 airlines, connecting more than 1,000 destinations in 178 countries. GarudaMiles members enjoy reciprocal earning and redemption opportunities throughout the alliance.

Airport experience

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport stands as Indonesia’s primary aviation hub, serving as the gateway to Jakarta and the country at large. Situated approximately 23 kilometers west of the capital in Tangerang, it is the busiest airport in Indonesia, named in honor of the nation’s first president and vice president.

The airport comprises four main terminals as of 2025: Terminals 1 and 2 handle most domestic routes, Terminal 3 caters to international departures, and the recently completed Terminal 4 introduces a new standard for design and efficiency, boasting automated check-in and green building features.

Soekarno-Hatta’s signature is its lush indoor landscaping, featuring tropical gardens and abundant greenery that infuse the terminals with a unique sense of place. Terminal 2 channels the relaxed ambiance of a resort, while Terminal 3 and the new Terminal 4 offer sleek, contemporary spaces with expansive natural light and modern amenities.

Business Class guests benefit from Garuda Indonesia’s Premium Check-In counters at Soekarno-Hatta and four regional hubs: Medan (Kualanamu), Bali (Ngurah Rai), Balikpapan (Sepinggan), and Makassar (Sultan Hasanuddin). This bespoke service includes expedited check-in, personal assistance, priority baggage handling, and access to fast-track immigration and security lanes.

The Garuda Indonesia Business Class Lounge, located in Terminal 3’s mezzanine near the First Class area, is an expansive, thoughtfully curated space adorned with Indonesian art and design elements. The lounge offers workstations, complimentary Wi-Fi, quiet zones, a reflexology corner, showers, a dedicated children’s play area, nursery, prayer facilities, and a smoking section. Ample seating accommodates both relaxation and productivity, with power outlets conveniently placed throughout.

Dining options are extensive, with two buffet lines serving Indonesian specialties and international fare, complemented by fresh salads, fruit, and desserts. Beverage selections include coffee, juice, soft drinks, and a central bar offering a curated choice of beer and wine.

Families traveling with young children will appreciate the vibrant playroom, fully stocked with toys and a television—plus a popcorn machine sure to delight little travelers.

Cabin & Seat

Garuda Indonesia’s Business Class consistently begins with row 6—a nod to its heritage, when First Class occupied the front of the aircraft. While First Class is now rare in the fleet, this tradition endures, setting the stage for a distinctive cabin experience.

Upon boarding, guests are welcomed with the melodic strains of Indonesian music and greeted by cabin crew dressed in elegant kebaya uniforms, reflecting the nation’s rich textile heritage. While the uniforms add a touch of local flair, the cabin itself is outfitted in understated earth tones for a calm, sophisticated atmosphere.

The Business Class product varies by aircraft type. The flagship Boeing 777-300ER and the advanced Airbus A330-900neo feature a 1-2-1 layout with staggered forward-facing seats, ensuring direct aisle access for all. The 777-300ER offers either 26 or 38 seats depending on configuration, while the A330-900neo provides 36 Business Class seats. Alternating rows offer either “honeymoon” pairs in the center or highly private single seats by the windows. Each seat boasts ergonomic design, adjustable headrests, generous legroom, and transforms into a 73-inch (185 cm) fully flat bed. Standard width is 21.2 inches (53.8 cm) with a 43-inch (109 cm) pitch—ample space for relaxation or work. Every seat is equipped with an individual reading light, USB ports, universal power outlets, and intuitive controls for both seat and entertainment functions. The tray table’s smart design allows for easy egress during meal service. At night, a twinkling ceiling mimics a starlit sky, enhancing the ambiance.

On select Airbus A330-300 aircraft, Garuda has installed 24 “Super Diamond” reverse herringbone seats in a 1-2-1 configuration. Window seats are subtly angled for privacy and optimal views, while center seats promote easy conversation for traveling companions.

Older Airbus A330-200 and A330-300 aircraft retain a 2-2-2 configuration with 36 angled-flat seats reclining up to 165 degrees. While not fully flat, these are mainly deployed on shorter routes, where comfort remains competitive for the flight duration.

The Businessclass flight search tool provides seat maps, images, and detailed specs for most aircraft, including seat pitch, width, and layout—empowering travelers to select their ideal cabin experience before booking.

Cuisine

Business Class guests are welcomed with a refined amuse-bouche and a selection of complimentary beverages after takeoff. The dining experience features two appetizer choices and three main courses, with menus thoughtfully curated to showcase both Asian and Western flavors. For flights to Japan and South Korea, authentic Japanese and Korean set menus are available. Passengers can also enjoy lighter bites and snacks on demand, such as artisanal noodles, cookies, and popcorn.

Garuda Indonesia is among a select group of airlines worldwide offering an onboard chef in Business Class on long-haul flights—an exclusive service that elevates the culinary experience. Meals are artfully plated on oversized porcelain, and the attention to detail rivals top-tier restaurants. On select routes, breakfast service includes eggs prepared to order, a luxury rarely found outside First Class. Each guest is presented with an individual bread basket, enhancing the bespoke feel of the meal.

European-inspired options might include Hot Smoked Lemon Pepper Salmon, Beetroot and Blue Cheese Salad with nutty dressings, or Chargrilled Beef Tenderloin accompanied by roasted potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Plant-based travelers are well catered for with dishes like Fettuccine Pesto and Grilled Mushrooms.

Signature Indonesian offerings include Nasi Goreng Special—paired with spicy prawn balado, buttered chicken, a sunny-side egg, and sambal—or Nasi Kuning Nusantara, featuring braised chicken in bumbu rujak, sweet soy tempeh, and sautéed vegetables.

Garuda excels in accommodating dietary needs, offering vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free, diabetic, and other specialized meals—including options for children and infants. All special requests require 24 hours’ advance notice and are provided at no additional charge.

Beverages

On domestic flights within Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia adheres to local regulations and does not serve alcoholic beverages. However, on international and long-haul routes (with the exception of flights to Saudi Arabia), a respectable selection of alcoholic drinks is available. Guests can enjoy a complimentary glass of Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé Champagne, a curated list of international red and white wines, and popular beers such as Bintang.

Notably, Champagne is served in elegant tall flutes and wines in proper stemware—an uncommon touch in Business Class, given the logistical challenges of glassware at altitude.

Garuda’s beverage service highlights local flavors, including Kedondong Juice—a refreshing drink made from ambarella fruit, reminiscent of kiwi—and a premium selection of Indonesian teas and coffees, celebrated for their distinctive profiles.

On many widebody aircraft, passengers can request espresso-based coffee drinks, such as cappuccinos or lattes, prepared fresh with onboard espresso machines.

The Businessclass flight search lists the Champagne and beverage options available in premium cabins, and we welcome your updates to keep our listings accurate.

Service

The hallmark of Garuda Indonesia’s premium service is its ‘Garuda Indonesia Experience,’ a philosophy rooted in the five senses and inspired by the nation’s renowned warmth and hospitality. From the gentle sounds of traditional music to the subtle scent of native florals, the ambiance is carefully curated to evoke a sense of place and welcome.

During our Business Class journey, the cabin crew consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism and attentiveness. Each flight attendant greeted us by name and maintained a balance of friendliness and discretion throughout the flight. Their ability to anticipate needs—whether offering a second glass of Champagne or preparing the seat for rest—reflects a deeply ingrained service culture, recognized by numerous Skytrax awards for best cabin crew in Asia.

Entertainment

Garuda Indonesia’s inflight entertainment system is powered by the Panasonic eX2 platform, offering each Business Class passenger a 15-inch HD touchscreen. The selection includes international and Indonesian films, TV series, live news channels, games, and curated music playlists—including traditional Indonesian folk music. While the system’s interface is not the latest generation, the content library is comprehensive and updated regularly.

Wi-Fi connectivity is available across the widebody fleet, with unlimited data replaced by time-based packages (1, 3, or 24 hours) for greater flexibility. Internet speeds are suitable for email, messaging, and light browsing, though streaming is limited by bandwidth constraints common in the industry.

Amenities & Facilities

Business Class travelers are treated to plush, hypoallergenic pillows with soft cotton covers and luxurious duvets for restful sleep. The amenity kit, designed in partnership with L’Occitane, features Verbena-infused toiletries—eau de toilette, lip balm, and body lotion—alongside a foldable brush and comb, dental kit, socks, an eye mask, ear plugs, and slippers for added comfort.

Short & Medium Haul

Garuda Indonesia’s network is dominated by short and medium-haul routes, primarily within Indonesia and to neighboring countries. The backbone of these services is the Boeing 737-800 and Bombardier CRJ1000 NextGen, with widebody jets supplementing capacity on high-demand routes.

The Boeing 737-800 features either 8 or 12 Business Class recliners in a spacious 2-2 configuration. The Bombardier CRJ1000 NextGen also offers a dedicated Business Class cabin with 12 seats in a 2-2 layout, though these are essentially enhanced economy seats with additional legroom.

On regional international sectors, Business Class guests receive a full meal and beverage service. For domestic flights, the offering is typically a premium snack, and—consistent with Indonesian law—alcohol is not served.

Sustainability

Garuda Indonesia’s commitment to sustainability is anchored in its comprehensive Green Strategy, aligning with IATA’s Four Pillar approach: investing in advanced aircraft technology, streamlining operations, supporting efficient infrastructure, and adopting effective economic measures. The airline’s environmental efforts include partnerships with organizations such as WWF Indonesia, notably through the #SOSharks initiative to curb shark fin consumption and ban its promotion in food media.

The Businessclass flight search now highlights CO2 emissions per flight, and our proprietary algorithms prioritize flights operated by the most fuel-efficient, eco-friendly aircraft for responsible travel planning.
