Review of Japan Airlines Premium Economy

Japan Airlines Premium Economy consistently sets the benchmark for comfort and service in its class, blending innovative seat design with the meticulous hospitality synonymous with Japanese culture. As the nation’s esteemed flag carrier and second-largest airline after ANA, JAL’s extensive global network seamlessly connects Japan to major cities across North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia.

As a proud member of the oneworld alliance, Japan Airlines partners with elite carriers such as British Airways, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, and American Airlines. This alliance enables frequent flyers to accrue and redeem miles across participating airlines, and grants oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members access to premium lounges worldwide, regardless of their cabin class on international journeys. JAL currently serves 52 domestic airports and 39 international destinations across 21 countries, maintaining its reputation for reliability and global reach.

The JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) loyalty program remains a favorite among discerning travelers, offering four elite tiers: Crystal, Sapphire, JGC Premier, and Diamond. Top-tier members can join the exclusive JAL Global Club (JGC), designed for the airline’s most loyal and experienced clientele.

Airport experience

Japan Airlines operates primary hubs at Tokyo Haneda and Narita, with significant operations in Osaka and Nagoya. The airline’s hallmark omotenashi—thoughtful, anticipatory service—begins at check-in, where staff demonstrate genuine courtesy and efficiency. From security to boarding, the process is consistently smooth and stress-free.

Premium Economy travelers departing from Tokyo-Haneda, Tokyo-Narita, Osaka-Kansai, and Nagoya, as well as select international airports like Honolulu, San Francisco, Frankfurt, and Bangkok, receive access to the acclaimed Sakura Lounges. These lounges embody tranquility, featuring contemporary interiors in soft, natural tones, extensive seating, and a curated buffet with Japanese and Western specialties, complemented by a wide range of beverages. Amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, workstations, a diverse selection of reading materials, and at Tokyo-Narita, dedicated children's rooms, nap pods, showers, and massage chairs.

It’s important to note that passengers upgrading to Premium Economy at the airport are not eligible for Sakura Lounge entry. Priority boarding is extended to Premium Economy guests, immediately following First and Business Class.

Cabin & Seat

Japan Airlines’ Premium Economy cabins are available exclusively on its Boeing widebody fleet, including the B777-200ER, B777-300ER, B787-8, and B787-9. B777 aircraft feature a spacious 2-4-2 layout, while the B787s offer a more intimate 2-3-2 configuration. Regardless of aircraft, JAL’s Premium Economy boasts an impressive 42-inch seat pitch—among the most generous in the industry—ensuring remarkable comfort even on ultra-long-haul flights.

The signature “JAL SKY PREMIUM” seat is thoughtfully engineered for privacy and ergonomics. Instead of reclining into the space behind, the seat slides forward, maximizing personal space for every passenger. Each seat is equipped with universal power outlets, USB charging, an adjustable headrest and footrest, a privacy divider, and a large, stable tray table—ideal for working or dining.

Our Businessclass flight search tool features updated images, seat maps, and in-depth configuration details for JAL and other premium airlines, empowering travelers to select the ideal seat for their journey.

Cuisine

The Premium Economy dining program on Japan Airlines is renowned for its focus on healthful, seasonal cuisine and collaborative chef partnerships. On long-haul flights to the USA, Europe, and Oceania, guests are treated to menus inspired by the Sky Wellness Kitchen and Tanita Café, emphasizing balanced, nourishing dishes such as salmon with millet pasta. Travelers on Hawaiian routes can savor creations by Chef Namae Shinobu of the Michelin-starred L’Effervescence, including signature beef rib and chestnut lasagna.

Other international routes showcase menus developed by a curated team of culinary talents, including finalists from Japan’s RED television competition and celebrated chef Fumiko Kono. Themed selections highlight sustainability and wellness, with options like “Love For The Planet.” JAL’s comforting “Udon De Sky” noodle bowl remains a staple, providing a warm, satisfying snack throughout the journey.

Beverages

Japan Airlines’ Premium Economy beverage program is as refined as its cuisine. Guests are welcomed with Vollereaux Brut Réserve NV Champagne, and can choose from a bespoke selection of wines—JAL’s proprietary blends crafted with French varietals by renowned sommelier Okoshi Motohiro. The drinks menu also features a curated array of Japanese sake and shochu, premium whiskies, gin, vodka, brandy, and traditional plum wine.

Non-alcoholic selections include the iconic Skytime peach and grape juice, a variety of soft drinks, and premium teas such as Ayataka cold-brewed green tea, alongside freshly brewed coffee. This comprehensive drinks list ensures there is something to suit every palate at altitude.

Service

Japan Airlines’ cabin crew exemplify omotenashi—delivering attentive, discreet, and heartfelt service throughout the flight. Our experiences have consistently shown that JAL’s team ranks among the world’s finest, earning accolades for their professionalism and genuine warmth. While the crew maintain a respectful distance to allow passengers to rest, they are always responsive and eager to assist at the press of a call button.

Cabin crew uniforms, designed by acclaimed Tokyo-based designer Yasutoshi Ezumi, reflect modern Japanese aesthetics with deep navy hues, signature red accents, and elegant scarf accessories. While English proficiency is generally strong, occasional minor misunderstandings may occur but are quickly resolved with characteristic grace.

Entertainment

JAL’s inflight entertainment—delivered via the JAL Entertainment Network—features a spacious 12.1-inch touch screen, also operable by remote control. The system offers an extensive library of the latest Japanese and international films, TV shows, music, e-books, and games. Passengers are provided with high-quality Sony noise-cancelling headphones for an immersive experience.

High-speed Wi-Fi is now available across all international routes, with flexible packages ranging from hourly to full-flight access. This allows travelers to stay connected, work, or stream entertainment seamlessly. Businessclass flight search provides up-to-date information on Wi-Fi availability and entertainment options for each aircraft.

Amenities & Facilities

Japan Airlines’ Premium Economy amenity kit is minimalist yet practical, including essentials such as a dental care kit, moisturizing face mask, earplugs, and an eye mask. Passengers are greeted with a warm, aromatic oshibori towel before the meal service. Cozy slippers, plush blankets, and supportive pillows are also provided to enhance rest and relaxation during the journey.

Short & Medium Haul

For short-haul operations, JAL has begun phasing out its older Boeing 737s in favor of next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft. While Premium Economy is not available on domestic routes, high-traffic services from Tokyo are operated by the airline’s modern A350 fleet. These aircraft feature a dense seating arrangement, with “J Class” offering wider seats and enhanced service that closely resembles the international Premium Economy experience, making it a popular choice for frequent domestic travelers.

Sustainability

Japan Airlines has reaffirmed its pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The continued introduction of next-generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A350, has already reduced CO2 output by up to 25% compared to older models. JAL is also expanding its use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), targeting a 10% SAF blend by 2030. The airline’s robust waste management initiatives include reducing, reusing, and recycling materials, with over 150 tons of food waste now composted annually as of 2025. Travelers can further participate in JAL’s Carbon Offset program to minimize their environmental impact.

The Businessclass flight search tool provides CO2 emission data for each flight, helping eco-conscious travelers select the greenest itineraries.
