Review of United Airlines Business Class

United Airlines set a new standard for premium travel with the unveiling of Polaris Business Class, bringing fully flat seats with direct aisle access to most of its long-haul fleet. The United Polaris experience quickly became a benchmark for North American carriers, acclaimed for its curated bedding by Saks Fifth Avenue, multi-course gourmet dining, and thoughtful amenities. Although some initial luxuries were streamlined in recent years, United’s relentless focus on passenger comfort has kept Polaris at the forefront of business class innovation.

Upgrading the fleet has been a gradual process, and while several aircraft still feature legacy layouts requiring aisle access over a neighbor, the signature bedding and attentive service remain. The plush pillow and blanket set continues to set United apart, and the overall sleep experience is among the best in the sky.

United stands out for its pioneering narrowbody transatlantic routes, connecting U.S. cities to secondary European destinations with reduced travel times. Its expansive hub network—including Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco—ensures seamless connections across continents, from the Pacific and Atlantic to South America and Oceania.

As a core member of the Star Alliance, United collaborates with nearly two dozen global partners, enabling passengers to accrue and redeem MileagePlus miles on airlines such as Lufthansa, ANA, Swiss, Air Canada, Ethiopian, and Thai Airways. Codeshare options further expand itinerary flexibility, and Star Alliance Gold members from partner airlines enjoy reciprocal perks, even when traveling in economy on United flights.

Airport experience

United’s international hubs offer a seamless ground experience with dedicated Premier check-in and expedited security, complemented by the exclusive Polaris lounges at Newark, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Polaris Business Class travelers enjoy access to United Club lounges at most U.S. airports, but the Polaris lounges deliver a truly elevated pre-flight environment.

Among the most sophisticated business class lounges in the U.S., Polaris lounges feature designer interiors, private work pods, expansive buffet spreads, refrigerators stocked with premium beverages, and a full-service bar with craft cocktails. Private nap suites—equipped with aromatherapy, plush pillows, blankets, and sleep masks—invite rest and rejuvenation between flights, a rarity among U.S. carriers.

Refreshing showers with premium Cowshed amenities are available, and for those seeking a restaurant-quality meal, a la carte dining rooms serve chef-driven dishes. This allows travelers to dine at their own pace before boarding, maximizing sleep time onboard Polaris flights.

United is expanding the Polaris lounge concept, with Washington Dulles set to debut in the near future. Access is extended to business class passengers on select Star Alliance partners, enhancing the value proposition for frequent international travelers.

United operates approximately 50 lounges worldwide, including at London Heathrow, Hong Kong, Mexico City, and Tokyo Narita. The airline’s Arrivals Lounge at London Heathrow remains a standout for post-flight comfort and amenities.

Cabin & Seat

United’s long-haul fleet comprises a diverse mix of aircraft—including Boeing 757, 767-300ER, 767-400ER, 777-200ER, 777-300ER, and several 787 Dreamliner variants—each with unique Polaris seating configurations. The legacy of the United-Continental merger is still visible, with a blend of seat layouts and varying levels of privacy and technology.

All Polaris cabins feature lie-flat seats upholstered in leather, but dimensions, screen sizes, and overall design differ across aircraft. The most modern Polaris seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, providing direct aisle access for every passenger, while some older layouts remain 2-2-2, requiring those in window seats to step over neighbors. It’s essential to consult the seat map before booking, as a handful of legacy 777s still offer less desirable 2-4-2 business class layouts. Middle seats in business class are best avoided for solo travelers seeking maximum privacy.

Regardless of configuration, every seat reclines to a fully flat bed and provides generous storage—either at your side or behind the seat. Outlets and USB ports are conveniently positioned, though the most up-to-date seats offer larger side tables and upgraded entertainment screens. Some seats—especially those next to the aisle—feel more open, while those angled toward the window are cocooned for added seclusion.

Solo travelers may prefer the single seats with tables between them and the aisle for an added buffer. United does not charge for advance seat selection, so it’s wise to review seating charts in advance. Couples will find the center pairs more conducive to conversation and shared space, no matter the aircraft.

Given the mix of cabins across the fleet, savvy passengers pay attention to both route and aircraft type. Many planes have two business class sections divided by the galley; choosing the smaller cabin can mean less foot traffic and a more tranquil inflight experience.

The flight search on Businessclass features seat maps, photos, and detailed specs for most airlines and aircraft, including seat pitch, width, and configuration. This empowers you to select the ideal seat before booking.

Cuisine

While United’s Polaris catering has evolved over the years, the airline continues to deliver a refined dining journey in business class. Signature touches like the morning Bloody Mary cart and in-depth wine tastings have been phased out, aligning Polaris more closely with modern business class standards (United no longer offers international first class).

Our recent Polaris flights began with a welcome beverage and a ramekin of warmed nuts, served directly to your seat as linens are laid out. This sets the stage for a sophisticated dining sequence.

Elegant grey linens adorn the table, followed by a tray featuring a fresh salad, appetizer, and artisan bread selection. Flight attendants circulate with the bread basket and offer beverage refills. United’s globe-inspired salt and pepper shakers—reminiscent of the airline’s logo—add a bespoke element to the presentation.

Travelers then choose from four main courses, typically including beef, poultry, seafood, or vegetarian pasta. The crew clears plates between courses, ensuring a polished, restaurant-like experience.

Pro tip: United’s Asian-inspired noodle soups, available with shrimp or chicken, are a passenger favorite and tend to run out quickly. Since there’s currently no advance meal selection, request your preferred dish early after boarding.

Dessert arrives via a two-tiered trolley, with made-to-order sundaes, fruit and cheese platters, and decadent pastries. The absence of economy-style carts maintains the premium ambiance, with each course thoughtfully served.

On transatlantic routes, a snack basket is available mid-flight, while longer intercontinental journeys feature plated snacks. About 90 minutes before landing, a light meal—hot or cold—is served, tailored to the time of day.

Special meals (vegetarian, low-calorie, kosher, and more) can be pre-ordered online or by phone. While there’s no formal dine-on-demand, an expedited meal service is available upon request. Flight attendants are generally accommodating with personalized requests when time allows.

Beverages

Prior to departure, Polaris guests are welcomed with a choice of water, fresh orange juice, or sparkling wine. Once airborne, an extensive beverage menu is presented, including two white and two red wines, Champagne (currently Duval Leroy or Beaumont des Crayères), port, and a selection of international beers. In 2025, United continues to offer Whispering Angel rosé to Polaris travelers, a nod to premium tastes.

The spirits and liqueurs list is comprehensive, with mixers, juices, sodas, premium coffee, and teas. Beverage selections occasionally reflect the route, with sake or specialty teas offered on flights to Asia.

The flight search on Businessclass provides up-to-date details on which champagne and wines are available in business and first class on leading airlines. If you notice a change, please contact our team with your feedback.

Service

Service levels in Polaris Business Class can vary, as is the case with most large network carriers. During our recent flights, we found the majority of United’s crew to be gracious, engaging, and attentive. Conversations felt genuine, and requests were handled efficiently. However, as with any unionized workforce, there can be inconsistencies, with some flights offering a warmer atmosphere than others. On balance, the service ethos is friendly and welcoming, with a clear focus on guest comfort.

Entertainment

United’s entertainment systems are robust, with each seat in Polaris equipped with a large, high-definition screen. Even on narrowbody Boeing 757s, travelers enjoy a wide selection of Hollywood blockbusters, television series, and global music channels. Content is available in multiple languages, and premium noise-canceling headphones are distributed before takeoff for an immersive experience.

A standout feature is the interactive 3D moving map, allowing passengers to track their journey in real time from various perspectives. Inflight Wi-Fi is accessible on nearly all international routes, with pricing based on duration rather than data usage, keeping travelers connected above the clouds.

The flight search on Businessclass details inflight entertainment options and Wi-Fi availability for each flight.

Amenities & Facilities

United continually refreshes its amenity kits, collaborating with luxury brands and occasionally releasing themed collector’s editions. The kits are generously stocked with skincare products, lip balm, dental kits, and other essentials. Lavatories are stocked with extras such as wrinkle-release spray and hydrating facial mist for mid-flight refreshment.

The highlight remains the Saks Fifth Avenue bedding collection, which includes a cooling gel pillow, lumbar support cushion, oversized plush pillow, duvet, and soft day blanket. Slippers are provided on flights to Asia, enhancing the sleep experience in Polaris.

Families with infants can pre-request bassinets on long-haul flights, available at designated seats for added convenience and comfort.

Short & Medium Haul

United extends the Polaris experience, with lie-flat seats and premium menus, to key transcontinental routes such as New York-Los Angeles and New York-San Francisco. Select Boston flights and other high-demand routes also feature Polaris cabins. Passengers receive the same Saks Fifth Avenue bedding and amenity kits as on international flights, with similar meal service tailored to the flight time.

The beverage program on domestic Polaris flights mirrors international offerings, with a full bar available. However, seat configurations may differ: some aircraft offer direct aisle access, while others retain older layouts. United operates both widebody and narrowbody aircraft on these routes, so seat selection is crucial for travelers prioritizing privacy.

United First is available on most other domestic routes not served by Polaris. While not as premium as Polaris, United First provides comfortable recliners, complimentary drinks, and a pared-down meal service—adequate for shorter journeys but less competitive for cross-country flights.

Sustainability

United Airlines is widely regarded as an industry leader in sustainability among North American carriers. The airline is firmly committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, investing heavily in Direct Air Capture technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and advancing the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). United has led the way in SAF adoption since 2016, having consumed more SAF than any other international carrier to date.

United was the first to fly Boeing aircraft equipped with Split Scimitar winglets, reducing fuel burn by up to 2%. Onboard, the airline continues to phase out single-use plastics, replacing stirrers and cocktail picks with sustainable bamboo alternatives. United was also the first U.S. airline to repurpose premium amenity kit items, partnering with Clean the World to donate hygiene products to those in need.

The flight search on Businessclass includes detailed CO2 emission data for each flight, and our proprietary scoring algorithm rewards airlines operating the most modern, eco-efficient fleets.
