Air New Zealand plans to offer beds for economy class passengers

After an intensive three-year innovation process, Air New Zealand has introduced the Economy Skynest—an industry-first concept offering six full-length, lie-flat sleeping pods for economy travelers on ultra-long-haul routes.

Recognizing the challenges of long-haul journeys such as the flagship Auckland-New York route—currently one of the world's longest nonstops at nearly 18 hours—Air New Zealand's leadership has prioritized sleep and comfort for all passengers. Chief Customer and Marketing Officer Mike Tod emphasized the airline’s pursuit of delivering exceptional in-flight experiences, especially in economy class where the need for quality rest is paramount.

"We are continually reimagining the onboard journey for every cabin, and we know that the inability to properly rest is a major concern for economy passengers on extended flights. The Skynest is our bespoke solution to this, designed to transform long-haul comfort," shared Mr. Tod.

Following a successful trial period on the Auckland-New York service, Air New Zealand has now confirmed the rollout of the Economy Skynest across select long-haul aircraft in 2025. The innovative sleep pods can be reserved in addition to a standard economy seat, allowing travelers the unique opportunity to enjoy uninterrupted, horizontal rest and arrive refreshed at their destination—an offering previously reserved for premium cabins.
