Airspace by Airbus

When discerning travelers weigh their choices for air travel, factors like route, fare class, and airline reputation often lead the decision-making process. Yet, the aircraft itself—its type and manufacturer—has become a key consideration, especially among those seeking the utmost in comfort and innovation. The Airbus A380, with its unmistakable double-deck silhouette, has become as iconic as the legendary Boeing 747, thanks in part to the influence of social media and a growing community of aviation enthusiasts.

Building on this recognition, Airbus has redefined the passenger journey with its Airspace by Airbus cabin concept. Unveiled at the prestigious Gherkin in London, Airspace is designed to harmonize passenger wellbeing with operational excellence for airlines. The philosophy behind Airspace is clear: deliver a bespoke onboard environment that elevates every aspect of the journey through four core pillars—ambience, comfort, service, and design.

Our firsthand experience with Airspace cabins reveals a meticulous approach. The full Airspace suite debuted on the Airbus A330neo, now a mainstay on global premium routes. The innovative features have also been integrated into the A350XWB, and ongoing retrofit programs are bringing these enhancements to the A380 and other Airbus wide-bodies, ensuring a consistent, world-class experience across the fleet.

Ambience is reimagined with advanced acoustic insulation, reducing cabin noise to levels previously reserved for private jets. State-of-the-art LED lighting systems, including an illuminated entrance at Door 2, offer over 16 million color combinations, enabling airlines to showcase their branding and create mood lighting tailored to different phases of flight.

Comfort is at the forefront, particularly in economy cabins, where passengers enjoy seats up to 18 inches wide in a spacious 2-4-2 configuration—comparable to the A380’s lauded comfort and notably superior to most 3-3-3 layouts. The latest-generation inflight entertainment, inherited from the A350XWB, removes restrictive under-seat boxes, maximizing legroom. Overhead bins have been expanded by 66%, and in business class, the absence of central bins creates a more open, airy atmosphere.

Service innovations include modular galley and lavatory layouts. Lavatories feature antimicrobial surfaces, hands-free fixtures, and discreet fragrance systems, while the crew rest area has been relocated to the lower deck, freeing up valuable cabin space for passengers.

Design elements complete the transformation. Clean, parallel lines along the fuselage and overhead bins create a sense of spaciousness. Dynamic LED lighting schemes help mitigate jet lag and enhance passenger comfort on long-haul journeys, offering tailored light settings for work, relaxation, or sleep.

Together, these features foster a sense of familiarity and preference for Airbus aircraft among frequent flyers. Externally, the A330neo showcases the distinctive cockpit ‘glasses’ and signature winglets of the A350, ensuring instant recognition and continuity across the Airbus family.

Since the introduction of Airspace, Airbus has secured substantial orders for the A330neo from leading carriers such as Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, AirAsia X, and TAP Air Portugal. These airlines are now offering passengers an unparalleled onboard experience that sets a new standard in international travel.
