Cathay Pacific’s alcohol for altitude - ‘Betsy’ Beer designed for 35,000ft

Cathay Pacific has reimagined the in-flight beverage experience with the introduction of Betsy Beer, a craft brew meticulously engineered for enjoyment at cruising altitude.

This exclusive beer, named in tribute to Cathay Pacific’s pioneering Douglas DC-3 ‘Betsy’ from the mid-20th century, is the result of a collaboration with the acclaimed Hong Kong Beer Co. Betsy Beer is now available to First and Business Class guests traveling between Hong Kong and the UK—Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester—on select routes throughout 2025.

Scientific research confirms that the reduced pressure and humidity inside an aircraft cabin can dull passengers’ ability to taste, particularly diminishing the perception of sweetness and saltiness by as much as 30%. However, notes of sourness, bitterness, and spice remain largely intact at altitude.

To address these unique challenges, Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Beer Co have crafted Betsy Beer with a higher carbonation—about 10% more than standard brews—delivering a livelier mouthfeel and enhanced flavor on the palate, even at 35,000 feet. The recipe draws on premium ingredients sourced from both Hong Kong and Britain, reflecting the airline’s rich heritage and global routes.

The flavor profile is shaped by the addition of Dragon Eye fruit, imparting a delicate, aromatic sweetness reminiscent of lychee, and locally harvested honey from Hong Kong’s New Territories, which infuses subtle floral notes. The distinguished Fuggle hop, a cornerstone of traditional British ales, lends an earthy depth and rounded character. This wheat beer is left unfiltered, preserving natural vitamin B and a satisfying, smooth texture—ideal for discerning travelers seeking a restorative refreshment in the air.

Guests can also savor Betsy Beer in Cathay Pacific’s flagship lounges at Hong Kong International Airport and London Heathrow, as well as at selected Swire-operated dining venues across Hong Kong, making this exclusive brew accessible both on the ground and above the clouds.
