American Airlines has expanded its transatlantic network with the introduction of three exclusive daily summer flights between Europe and the United States.
Travelers can now enjoy nonstop service from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to both Rome Fiumicino Airport and Amsterdam Schiphol, as well as from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
These premium seasonal routes are scheduled to operate daily throughout the summer months, enhancing American's existing year-round connections to Rome, Amsterdam, and Barcelona from other key U.S. gateways.
Honoring Aviation History on Board Shepherd One
The inaugural Dallas–Rome journey was notably operated by the iconic Boeing 777-200ER, famously used by Pope Francis during his U.S. visit. This aircraft, known as “Shepherd One,” now proudly features a commemorative plaque onboard. The very seat occupied by the pontiff has been preserved and is showcased at the C.R. Smith Museum in Fort Worth, offering aviation enthusiasts a unique piece of history. Subsequent flights utilize American’s state-of-the-art Boeing 777-200ER fleet, renowned for comfort and reliability.
The Dallas–Amsterdam service features a modernized Boeing 767-300, equipped with 28 fully lie-flat Business Class suites, each providing direct aisle access, and 21 Main Cabin Extra seats offering additional personal space. The Chicago–Barcelona route is operated by the fuel-efficient Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, delivering a quiet and restful cabin environment for long-haul travelers.
Vasu Raja, American Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, commented: “These new transatlantic flights give our U.S. and European customers even more flexibility and connectivity, with seamless access to over 150 destinations across the Americas and beyond.”
With these latest additions, American Airlines now operates more than 450 weekly flights and 52 distinct routes linking Europe and the United States. Flagship routes such as London Heathrow to New York JFK and London Heathrow to Chicago O’Hare remain among the most frequented, each offering up to four daily departures.
Travelers heading to the U.S. should remain aware of updated security regulations, including restrictions on electronic devices in hand luggage for certain flights. While the scope of these measures has evolved since their initial implementation, passengers are advised to consult the latest guidelines from both American Airlines and U.S. authorities.
