Athens Wins Prestigious Culture Award

Athens was honored as the Emerging Cultural City of the Year for 2017 at the esteemed Leading Culture Destinations Awards—often referred to as the ‘Culture Oscars’—during a ceremony in London.

Despite navigating years of economic challenge, the Greek capital has consistently demonstrated a vibrant and resilient creative spirit, earning praise from global cultural leaders.

The judging panel spotlighted the transformative impact of Documenta 14, one of the world’s most influential contemporary art exhibitions, alongside the visionary programming at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, now a pillar of Athens’ cultural landscape.

The accolade was accepted by Mayor Giorgos Kaminis, who described Athens as “a cosmopolitan, secure, and forward-thinking metropolis.”

"Athens’ artists, innovative cultural venues, and strong engagement with the creative community, coupled with a remarkable surge in international tourism, affirm our city’s dynamic trajectory," Kaminis remarked at the event.

Further cementing its status, Athens was also selected as UNESCO’s World Book Capital for 2018, celebrating its literary heritage and commitment to the arts.

For discerning travelers, autumn remains the ideal season to experience Athens—balmy days, golden sunlight, and fewer crowds create optimal conditions for exploring both ancient wonders and contemporary galleries.
