Brussels Airlines opens a “boutique hotel in the air”

Discover the transformed long-haul cabins of Brussels Airlines, where luxury meets Belgian artistry.

Brussels Airlines has elevated its intercontinental flying experience, investing over €10 million per aircraft to create an atmosphere reminiscent of an intimate boutique hotel at 30,000 feet. The airline collaborated with renowned JPA Design to reimagine Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins across its A330 fleet—each space meticulously crafted for a personalized, upscale journey.

Placing equal emphasis on the voyage and the destination, Brussels Airlines delivers three distinct class experiences, each infused with Belgian warmth and sophistication. The result is a “boutique hotel in the sky,” offering guests the same bespoke hospitality found in Brussels’ finest boutique accommodations. JPA Design’s vision shines through every detail, from the spatial flow to the curated finishes in all three cabins.

Belgian Design Excellence

Signature Belgian materials like rich wood accents and premium leather define the refined interiors. The A330’s new look draws inspiration from Belgian Art Nouveau, most notably the work of Victor Horta. This influence is evident in the boarding area, where a graceful Art Nouveau dome light sets the tone for an elegant inflight experience.

Culinary prowess is central to Belgian culture, and Brussels Airlines continues its tradition of collaborating with a Michelin-starred Belgian chef—currently Thierry Theys—to curate Business Class menus. The airline’s celebrated Belgian beer and bar culture is brought onboard via a self-service bar, featuring a rotating selection of eight iconic Belgian brews available to all guests. Belgian wines, specialty coffee, and Neuhaus chocolates are thoughtfully presented by the attentive crew, ensuring an authentically Belgian journey from takeoff to landing.

Business Class: Boutique Luxury and Art Nouveau Elegance

Brussels Airlines’ reimagined Business Class channels the intimacy and refinement of a boutique hotel, blending timeless Belgian design with Art Nouveau flourishes. The cabin’s aesthetic—marked by intricate patterns and soft lighting—evokes the signature hospitality found in ‘The Loft’ lounge at Brussels Airport. Details such as the carpet, inspired by Antwerp Central Station’s historic vaults, and seat fabrics influenced by Belgian designers like Dries Van Noten, create a sense of place and exclusivity.

With just 30 seats arranged in a staggered configuration, privacy and comfort are paramount. Travelers can select solo or paired seating, and each seat transforms seamlessly from a plush lounge chair to a fully flat, two-meter bed with customizable firmness. Ambient lighting adapts throughout the flight, promoting restful sleep and minimizing jet lag. Entertainment is state-of-the-art, with a 15.6-inch HD touchscreen that tilts for optimal viewing and premium noise-cancelling headphones for immersive enjoyment.

Culinary indulgence is at the heart of the Business Class experience. Menus crafted by Michelin-starred chef Thierry Theys are complemented by a curated wine list, including Laurent Perrier Champagne, handpicked by Master of Wine Fiona Morrison. A four-course tasting menu is served with finesse, while guests can also visit the exclusive walk-up Belgian bar just behind the cabin—a first for the airline—offering renowned Belgian beers and a convivial space for networking at altitude.

Premium Economy: Tranquility Meets Contemporary Comfort

Brussels Airlines’ Premium Economy is designed as a serene retreat, completely partitioned from other cabins to foster peace and privacy. The space features calming hues of purple and blue, with subtle red accents that reflect the airline’s brand identity. Ergonomic seats provide enhanced personal space, plush cushioning, and expanded armrests for uninterrupted relaxation. With a generous 38-inch seat pitch—offering 23% more legroom than Economy—and a 40-degree recline, restful sleep comes naturally. The adjustable headrest and wider seat further contribute to a restorative experience.

Technology and productivity are prioritized with one of Europe’s largest 13.3-inch HD entertainment screens, plus integrated AC and USB charging at every seat. Attentive service is a hallmark of Premium Economy, with thoughtful touches such as a complimentary water bottle, soothing hot towel, and, mid-flight, gourmet ice cream served as a movie treat. The upgraded dining experience and personalized attention create a distinctly premium travel environment.

Economy Class: Inviting Comfort and Belgian Hospitality

The refreshed Economy cabin delivers a welcoming atmosphere inspired by the vibrant sunrise over the North Sea, reflecting Brussels Airlines’ commitment to warm Belgian hospitality. Every seat features an ergonomically designed headrest with adjustable neck support for increased comfort and privacy. The generous seat recline, personal USB charging, and an extensive selection of entertainment and games on a 10.1-inch screen ensure a pleasant journey for all guests. Travelers enjoy a thoughtfully prepared international meal, complemented by a pre-meal aperitif and complimentary selection of beers, wines, and spirits.

Brussels Airlines’ retrofitted A330s are now in service across the long-haul network, setting a new standard in Economy Class comfort for 2025 and beyond.
