Cathay Pacific overhauls Marco Polo Club

Cathay Pacific overhauls Marco Polo Club

In response to evolving traveler expectations, Cathay Pacific has reimagined its signature Marco Polo Club, introducing a streamlined points-based structure that redefines how members achieve status and unlock rewards.

As a cornerstone of the Oneworld alliance and a long-standing Qantas partner, Cathay Pacific has implemented significant updates to the Marco Polo Club. Enhancements now include complimentary upgrades for Gold and Diamond members as well as expanded opportunities for earning points on economy fares.

According to Cathay Pacific, “Delivering a seamless journey is our priority. We’ve preserved much-loved benefits such as unlimited lounge access for Silver members and above, as well as priority booking and check-in. The Guaranteed Seat Reservation for Gold and Diamond tiers remains, though with revised qualifying fare classes.”

‘Club Points’ now serve as the primary metric for Marco Polo Club progression, replacing the former ‘Club Miles’ and ‘Club Sectors’ systems. With this update, Cathay Pacific states that “members accrue points more rapidly when flying in premium cabins, and across a broader range of eligible fares on both Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon.”

Members still have full access to earn and redeem Asia Miles as before.

The number of Club Points earned depends on the airline, travel class, fare category, and flight distance. The updated model prioritizes travel on Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon, rewarding more points compared to Oneworld partners.

Club Points replace Club Miles, Club Sectors

Gold members who reach 1,000 Club Points are now entitled to four complimentary one-way upgrades annually, valid on short and medium-haul Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon routes. Diamond members also receive four upgrades per year, which can be used on any Cathay Pacific or Cathay Dragon itinerary, regardless of destination.

Each upgrade allows a one-class jump: from economy to premium economy (or directly to business where premium economy is unavailable), premium economy to business class, or business class to first class.

After accumulating 200 Club Points, Green members—who also benefit from priority check-in and boarding—receive a single-use Cathay Pacific lounge pass, valid for access to any Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, or partner business class lounge.

Silver-tier travelers continue to enjoy unlimited business class lounge privileges on Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon flights, and can also earn two companion lounge passes upon reaching 450 Club Points.

Gold members are awarded two additional business class lounge passes for companions at 800 Club Points, while Diamond members receive two first class lounge passes for personal use once they reach 1,400 Club Points.

Free upgrades for Gold and Diamond members

Travelers booking economy class on S, N, and Q fare classes are now eligible to earn Club Points—an enhancement over previous policies that excluded these lower fare types.

The annual membership fee for the Marco Polo Club has been revised to US$100 per year, replacing the previous one-time US$50 charge.

Extra Lounge Passes can be earned across all tiers

•       Diamond members now receive an extra Gold companion card
•       Members can opt for a “Membership Holiday,” allowing them to retain elite status for up to a year
•       The minimum age to qualify as a young member has been reduced from 18 to 12

These changes reflect Cathay Pacific’s strategy to focus on rewarding high-value travelers, while refining qualification thresholds for top-tier status.

To assist members in navigating the new system, a comprehensive Club Points calculator and detailed guides are available on the Cathay Pacific website.
