Cathay Pacific Airways has officially introduced its very first Airbus A350-900XWB to Hong Kong International Airport, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s ongoing fleet modernization. The much-anticipated delivery flight from Toulouse, France, culminated in a grand reception held at Hong Kong’s state-of-the-art aviation hub.
This aircraft is the first of a planned 48 A350s joining Cathay Pacific’s fleet, all of which are equipped with the airline’s signature cabin designs: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy. These new interiors reflect Cathay Pacific’s commitment to elevating the passenger experience with refined comfort and cutting-edge technology.
The exclusive unveiling took place within the meticulously maintained hangars of Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (HAECO), where invited guests, media representatives, and airline staff enjoyed an advance tour of the airline’s latest flagship jet.
During the ceremony, Rupert Hogg, Cathay Pacific’s Chief Operating Officer, shared his insights on the new aircraft’s passenger-centric innovations: “We recognize that our travelers value restful sleep, world-class entertainment, and thoughtfully designed amenities. Our new A350-900XWB delivers on all these fronts.
"Enhanced cabin air quality, reduced noise, and a host of new features combine to create an environment optimized for relaxation. We have invested in a robust, next-generation entertainment system as well.
"Every seat includes an ultra-high-definition touchscreen, giving guests access to a broad library of movies, series, live news, and curated music. For those wishing to stay connected, inflight Wi-Fi is available throughout the journey. The A350 exemplifies our vision for the future of travel, and we are confident passengers will notice the difference immediately.
"This highly efficient aircraft positions Cathay Pacific to expand our global reach even further, reinforcing Hong Kong’s status as a premier international gateway and supporting the city’s role in global commerce.”
The A350-900XWB is engineered for passenger wellbeing, featuring a spacious, whisper-quiet cabin, expansive panoramic windows, customizable LED mood lighting, and generous overhead storage—designed to foster a tranquil, restorative atmosphere.
The aircraft accommodates 280 travelers across three distinct classes: 38 in Business, 28 in Premium Economy, and 214 in Economy, ensuring a tailored experience for every guest.
Business Class seats convert to fully flat beds and now offer a longer seat pitch—extended from 43” to 45”—plus a larger entertainment screen, now 18.5” from the previous 15.4”. Additional amenities include increased storage, and intuitive features such as “Do Not Disturb” and “Wake Up Call” options integrated into the entertainment interface. The cabin configuration follows a 1-2-1 layout for maximum privacy.
Premium Economy and Economy guests benefit from newly designed seats, featuring tablet stands for personal device streaming, universal power sockets, and enhanced USB charging. Premium Economy is laid out in a 2-4-2 arrangement, with upgraded seat pitch (now 40”, up from 38”) and deeper recline (9” vs. 8”). Economy Class retains a 3-3-3 formation, with the personal screen enlarged to 11”. The seat pitch remains at 32” with 6” of recline, while seat width is now 18”.
This A350 is Cathay Pacific’s pioneering aircraft to offer comprehensive onboard Wi-Fi, with plans to retrofit the rest of the long-haul fleet. Wi-Fi is available from gate to gate, and pricing is structured for flexibility: unlimited access for flights under six hours is $12.95 (£8.90), while longer journeys are priced at $19.95 (£13.60). For shorter sessions, one hour of internet is available for $9.95 (£6.80).
Powered by state-of-the-art Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, the A350-900XWB leads its class in quietness, is 25% more fuel-efficient, and achieves a 25% reduction in operating costs compared to previous-generation widebodies.
The aircraft’s initial commercial deployment is on the busy Hong Kong–Manila and Hong Kong–Taipei routes, before expanding to long-haul destinations such as London-Gatwick, Düsseldorf, and Auckland. As of 2025, the A350-900XWB has become a mainstay on Cathay Pacific’s flagship intercontinental services, embodying the airline’s philosophy of continuous innovation and passenger-first design.
