Featuring a remarkable 24-inch 4K ultra-HD display, advanced infrared eye-tracking, a customizable virtual window, immersive surround sound, and multi-sensory effects, the Immersive Seat from BE Aerospace and Thales is redefining the boundaries of premium air travel. During our exclusive hands-on review, we experienced every innovative feature with a personal demonstration from the product management team.

This state-of-the-art seat—aptly named the ‘Immersive Seat’—is currently available as a fully operational prototype, equipped with all its pioneering technologies. While no commercial carrier has yet introduced it to their fleet, BE Aerospace and Thales are actively seeking a launch partner to collaborate on the final refinements and customization.

Despite its groundbreaking technology, the Immersive Seat is designed for business class cabins, not first class. Its 1-2-1 configuration would suit the latest generation of long-haul aircraft, aligning with industry trends toward privacy-focused suites in first class. The design, shaped in partnership with BMW Designworks, blends cutting-edge tech with ergonomic sophistication.

Eye Synchronisation with infrared camera

The standout innovation of the Immersive Seat is its intuitive, remote-free control over the in-flight entertainment system, enabled by advanced infrared eye-tracking technology.

Upon activating the screen, a calibration sequence engages: a digital aircraft traverses the display, training the system to recognize and adapt to your unique eye movements and gaze patterns. This process, completed in under a minute, ensures seamless, personalized interaction.

Effortless Screen Synchronization

Once calibrated, navigation becomes effortless. Simply direct your gaze to a menu icon or entertainment option, and the system responds instantly—no physical controller required. Throughout playback, the camera continues to monitor your attention; if you doze off or divert your eyes, the content automatically pauses. The same applies if a crew member approaches with service, enhancing both convenience and discretion.

For added flexibility, two intuitive control panels are integrated into the armrests, offering tactile adjustments for seat positioning and system functions, while also detecting hand gestures for supplementary commands.

Mobile Synchronisation

The Immersive Seat takes personalization to the next level by synchronizing with your smartphone—simply place your device on the dedicated wireless charging pad adjacent to the screen. Instantly, the system customizes your cabin environment, adapting themes, color palettes, and digital backdrops to match your personal preferences stored on your phone.

Beyond aesthetics, your mobile device communicates with the IFE system to enhance continuity. If you pause a movie mid-flight, your phone records your progress, so you can resume seamlessly on your next journey in an Immersive Seat-equipped cabin.

Additional features include real-time updates on connecting flights and tailored recommendations for meals and beverages, based on your travel history and preferences, ensuring a consistently bespoke experience every time you fly.

Built-in massage, vibrating effects and surround sound

Step into an audio cocoon with the Immersive Seat’s integrated 5.1 channel surround speakers discreetly positioned in the headrest. Designed for privacy, the sound remains virtually inaudible to others even within close proximity, allowing you to enjoy cinematic audio without headphones.

The seat’s ergonomic backrest incorporates both massage functions and synchronized vibration feedback. Watching an action-packed film? Feel the subtle tremors of on-screen explosions and dynamic effects. Need to unwind? Activate the massage feature for a soothing, spa-like experience at 35,000 feet.

Not just one screen - two screens

This seat features not one, but two high-resolution screens. The primary 24-inch 4K Ultra HD monitor delivers stunning visuals for entertainment and productivity. Alongside, a secondary display functions as a virtual window, giving passengers the power to customize their environment.

During our trial, this virtual window showcased a real-time flight map, highlighting your location and upcoming service milestones—such as meal times and estimated arrival. Alternatively, it can display calming visuals, from vibrant aquariums to panoramic landscapes, transforming the in-flight ambiance and providing a sense of openness even in windowless cabins.

Beyond aesthetics, the virtual window also serves as a privacy divider, enhancing personal space and minimizing distractions from adjacent seats.

Fully-flat seat, with a screen that adapts

True to modern business class standards, the Immersive Seat offers a fully horizontal, lie-flat bed configuration. The seat’s generous width and plush cushioning ensure restful sleep and ergonomic support, catering to a wide range of body types and sleeping positions.

What sets this seat apart is the main display’s adaptive tilt function. As you recline, the screen automatically adjusts its angle, maintaining optimal visibility and comfort—whether you’re lounging, dining, or drifting off to sleep.

What do BusinessClass think?

Impressively innovative and engaging, the Immersive Seat offers a glimpse into the future of premium air travel. Our hands-on experience revealed a harmonious blend of advanced technology and genuine passenger comfort. However, reliability and user-friendliness are paramount—travelers expect seamless operation, not technical hiccups, especially at this level of luxury. The development team’s commitment to co-creating the final product with an airline partner is a smart move, ensuring real-world feedback shapes the ultimate design.

Should an airline introduce the Immersive Seat into commercial service, it would instantly differentiate itself as a pioneer in passenger experience—potentially setting new benchmarks for business class worldwide.
