Amsterdam Airport Schiphol welcomes travelers to its cutting-edge new pier, a significant milestone in the airport’s ongoing transformation. Following years of meticulous planning and construction, the futuristic terminal extension is now fully operational, setting a new benchmark for innovation and eco-conscious design in European aviation.
This advanced pier, conceived by AECOM - cepezed in collaboration with Imd, dGmR, and Copijn, has been thoughtfully engineered to elevate the passenger journey.
Boasting eight boarding gates, the pier is configured for maximum flexibility: five gates on the north side cater to narrow-body aircraft, while three on the south side are designed for wide-body jets. The southern gates can also be reconfigured to accommodate up to six narrow-body planes, ensuring seamless operations as airline needs evolve. Plans are in place for two additional wide-body gates on the south side, further enhancing capacity in the near future.
Spanning an impressive 55,000 square meters—about the size of 11 football fields—the new pier is now Schiphol’s most sustainable terminal space. Eco-friendly materials such as bioplastics, high-performance insulating glass, and recycled marble and plastic tiles are integral to its construction.
With over 5,000 square meters of solar panels and a sophisticated rainwater harvesting system that supplies water for restroom facilities, this pier exemplifies Schiphol’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable travel.
