Gritti Palace: Gran Canals Grand Dame

Gritti Palace: Gran Canals Grand Dame

For travelers seeking an immersive experience into Venice’s storied past and sophisticated present, The Gritti Palace stands as a beacon of refined luxury on the Grand Canal.

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Venice, a mere stroll from St. Mark's Square, this iconic 5-star hotel was famously described by Hemingway as his Venetian sanctuary.

Long considered among the city’s most prestigious addresses, The Gritti Palace can be elusive to the uninitiated, especially for those arriving on foot as we did.

A subtle plaque marks its entrance at the end of a tranquil lane. Impeccably dressed doormen await, while polished Riva boats glide along the canal, ready to escort guests directly to the hotel’s private dock.

Once inside, the true grandeur of the property is revealed: you are enveloped in the ambiance of an authentic Venetian palazzo, its elegance unmistakable.

Arriving by boat, as many guests do, offers an unforgettable introduction. The Gritti Palace commands a prime canal-side location, surrounded by esteemed neighbors such as The Europa, The Danieli, The Bauer, and The Monaco. While each is remarkable, none matches the allure of The Gritti. Stepping onto the hotel’s exclusive pier evokes the glamour of a classic film—yet this is the reality awaiting every guest.

Originally constructed as the private residence of Doge Andrea Gritti in the 16th century, the building has witnessed centuries of Venetian history. Its transformation into a luxury hotel came in 1947, when it was rechristened The Gritti Palace in honor of its first illustrious owner.

Now part of Marriott’s The Luxury Collection, The Gritti Palace underwent a meticulous multi-year restoration overseen by renowned designer Chuck Chewning, with an investment exceeding $60 million. The result is a seamless blend of historical splendor and modern comfort, making it one of Venice’s most coveted luxury hotels in 2025.

Guests can indulge in a host of exceptional amenities: a celebrated fine dining restaurant, the legendary Longhi Bar, lavish rooms and suites, and the curated Explorer’s Library. Throughout, the interiors exude Venetian artistry—original terrazzo floors, walls cloaked in shimmering silk, and opulent draperies crafted from the city’s famed textiles. Antique furniture, much of it hand-carved, reinforces the authenticity of the palazzo atmosphere.

The sensation is one of traveling back through time. Each guestroom and suite is uniquely appointed with distinctive hues, heirloom furnishings, and sumptuous fabrics.

The hotel’s ten signature suites are named after notable former residents and guests, including acclaimed authors and local luminaries. Each suite is thoughtfully decorated with memorabilia and objets d’art reflecting its namesake’s legacy.

The Hemingway Suite, for example, features an extensive library of books and artifacts that pay tribute to the author’s passions. Among them is a cherished copy of "Across the River and Into the Trees," written during his stay, signed by Hemingway’s son as a personal memento to The Gritti Palace.

Across all accommodations, guests are treated to exquisite materials, original artworks, antiques, and bespoke Rubelli fabrics, reinforcing the hotel’s commitment to Venetian craftsmanship.

The hotel’s restaurant is a showcase of noble décor—Murano glass chandeliers, ornate wallpaper, and authentic antiques create a setting of lavish yet inviting warmth.

The menu celebrates the best of classic Italian gastronomy, with an emphasis on traditional recipes and seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Dishes are meticulously prepared and elegantly presented, with the signature risotto earning particular acclaim. During our stay, we savored handmade pasta with truffles, Venetian-style calf’s liver, and inventive accompaniments—each plate a testament to culinary heritage.

The hotel’s art collection merits special attention, with original Pietro Longhi paintings displayed in the Longhi Bar, adding to the cultural allure of the property.

The Longhi Bar itself, inspired by classic Venetian boat design, opens onto a panoramic terrace overlooking the Grand Canal and the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. It’s the quintessential setting for sipping a Rossini while watching the world drift by.

The Gritti Palace’s guestbook reads like a who’s who of royalty, celebrities, writers, and art aficionados. On our visit, we spotted a handwritten note from the Jolie-Pitt family in the entrance hall. Despite its illustrious clientele, the hotel remains deeply connected to the spirit of Venice and its community.

Membership in the exclusive "Key Club" grants select guests private access to the Longhi Bar, preserving the hotel’s authentic Venetian soul. The Gritti Palace consciously avoids becoming an insular enclave, honoring its legacy as a gathering place for artists and writers—some of whom found inspiration here long before fame or fortune.

Hemingway himself spent many days at The Gritti Palace, penning "Across the River and Into the Trees" and nurturing a romance with the noble Adriana Ivancich. The couple’s presence lingers in the hotel’s storied halls.

Regarded as one of Venice’s preeminent hotels, The Gritti Palace commands rates that reflect its unparalleled standard of luxury. Its loyal clientele ensures high occupancy throughout the year, with many guests returning season after season.

What resonated most during our stay was the genuine warmth and attentiveness of the staff, which, paired with the hotel’s rich history and lavish décor, created an atmosphere both grand and inviting.

This is not a destination for those seeking minimalist design. But for travelers yearning to immerse themselves in the ambiance of a bygone era—where literary legends like Somerset Maugham and Hemingway once roamed—the Gritti Palace is the quintessential Venetian retreat.
