The iconic Martin’s Bank building now stands as Liverpool’s premier five-star hotel, featuring 227 opulent rooms and an exclusive spa—setting a new standard for luxury hospitality in the city.
Originally designed by Herbert James Rowse and inaugurated in 1932, Martin’s Bank is celebrated as a masterpiece of neo-classical architecture in England. During World War II, this landmark discreetly safeguarded a significant portion of the UK’s gold reserves—a testament to its historical gravitas.
The Martin’s Bank building remains one of England’s most exquisite examples of neo-classical design.
Under the stewardship of the Principal Hayley Group, renowned for their portfolio of award-winning properties, a £50 million investment has meticulously restored and transformed this Grade II-listed Water Street address into a world-class hotel complete with a destination spa, sophisticated bar, and acclaimed fine dining restaurant.
Following extensive and sensitive renovations that began in 2016, the hotel welcomed its first guests in 2018. The property now boasts a state-of-the-art spa, two signature restaurants, three distinct bars, and a collection of elegant event spaces. Many original banking hall features, such as the historic tellers’ counter and authentic writing desks, have been thoughtfully preserved, blending heritage with contemporary luxury.
The interiors showcase grand classical elements, seamlessly integrated with modern comforts and bespoke design details.
This project has made a significant impact on the local economy, creating over 200 permanent hospitality positions and generating hundreds of construction jobs during the redevelopment phase.
Tony Troy, CEO of Principal Hayley Group, commented, “Martin’s Bank Hotel represents a pivotal addition to Liverpool’s vibrant hospitality scene. The city’s dynamic growth as a cultural and convention destination has created demand for a truly exceptional luxury hotel. Our vision has been to craft a landmark that honors the building’s storied past while offering unrivaled guest experiences.”
Working closely with Liverpool’s heritage authorities, the restoration has set a benchmark for adaptive reuse, ensuring the building’s unique architectural and historical features remain center stage for generations to come.
The hotel’s striking façade on Water Street continues to captivate both guests and locals, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of Liverpool’s architectural legacy.
