Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has celebrated the official launch of its cutting-edge Midfield Concourse, a transformative addition that underscores the airport’s commitment to innovation and passenger comfort.
Strategically situated to the west of Terminal 1 and nestled between HKIA’s parallel runways, the expansive 105,000-square-metre, five-level concourse features 20 aircraft stands and significantly boosts the proportion of passengers boarding directly via airbridges. Access to the Midfield Concourse is seamless, thanks to a dedicated extension of the airport’s Automated People Mover system from Terminal 1.
Distinguished guests, including Jack So Chak-kwong, joined the inaugural group of travelers at the official opening, where Mr. So expressed gratitude to the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) team, project partners, and regulatory bodies for delivering the project punctually and within budget. He commented, “The Midfield Concourse is an essential component of HKIA’s growth strategy, positioning us to accommodate rising passenger volumes as we progress with the Three-runway System. Sustainability has been central to every aspect of its design.”
Relaxation zones with panoramic glass façades
Travelers can look forward to an impressive selection of luxury boutiques, global dining options, ergonomic seating equipped with universal power outlets, inviting deck chairs by the floor-to-ceiling windows, and complimentary high-speed WiFi alongside interactive workstations.
Environmental stewardship is at the heart of the new Midfield Concourse, which incorporates advanced green technologies such as energy-efficient LED lighting, north-facing skylights for optimized daylighting, solar shading, thermally insulated façade glazing, lush planters and vertical gardens, and rooftop solar panels—all contributing to a reduced carbon footprint.
Positioned between the dual runways for optimal aircraft flow
Since its initial phase, the Midfield Concourse has smoothly transitioned to full-scale operations. Currently, it accommodates approximately 230 flights daily, representing about 20% of HKIA’s total passenger departures and arrivals. The facility has elevated the airport’s annual passenger capacity by 10 million, reinforcing Hong Kong’s status as a premier aviation hub.
