Japan Airlines upgrades business class aboard its Boeing 787

Japan Airlines has refined its business class offerings across its Boeing 787 fleet, reflecting the airline's commitment to premium comfort and innovation. While historically the Boeing 787s featured the Shell Flat NEO seat—a model now considered dated compared to modern competitors—JAL has progressively introduced its acclaimed Sky Suite and Sky Suite III products on select routes between Europe and Japan.

The carrier operates both the 787-8 and 787-9, with the latest Sky Suite III primarily installed on the 787-9 variant. Most 787-8 aircraft continue to feature the Shell Flat NEO seat, though select planes also offer the original Sky Suite, renowned for its intelligent configuration that ensures every traveler enjoys direct aisle access—a hallmark of contemporary business class design.

The Shell Flat NEO seat, while once innovative, is now surpassed by fully flat competitors. With a maximum recline of approximately 170 degrees, passengers may find themselves sliding forward and, as a result, achieving restful sleep can be a challenge. Furthermore, the traditional layout means window seat passengers must still navigate past their neighbors to reach the aisle, falling short of the privacy and convenience today’s business travelers expect.

Sky Suite III addresses these concerns with a cutting-edge 1-2-1 configuration, mirroring industry leaders like Cathay Pacific. Every seat is angled for optimal privacy—window seats face the view, while center pairs are oriented toward the aisle—guaranteeing direct aisle access for all and significantly elevating the onboard experience.
