Launch of Air France's new service concept on medium-haul flights - testing new food on the route Stockholm-Paris

This spring, Air France introduced its reimagined onboard service for medium-haul European flights, with Stockholm as a showcase destination. The unveiling event at Arlanda Airport welcomed Air France CEO Frédéric Gagey and distinguished French guests. Our editorial team joined the inaugural flight to experience the refreshed business class menu, now presented on elegant, custom-designed porcelain.

This innovative full-service offering is available on routes exceeding 2 hours and 15 minutes, including Stockholm–Paris. Business class travelers can now select from two chef-curated main courses, each served on newly crafted china. Concurrently, the airline’s previous Premium Economy has transitioned to the new Economy Flex fare, which grants Sky Priority privileges and reserved seating at the front of the economy cabin.

These enhancements are the result of a comprehensive survey, reflecting feedback from over 10,000 passengers to ensure Air France’s product remains competitive and tailored to evolving traveler expectations. Findings highlighted the need for a more pronounced distinction in business class, while the traditional premium economy was found to be outdated and has been replaced.

New food concept in business class and economy class

The culinary offering has been thoughtfully elevated to emulate the quality found on Air France’s long-haul routes. Business class guests are welcomed with a pre-flight beverage, followed by a choice of two gourmet hot entrées, complemented by a curated selection of French wines or Champagne. The meal concludes with artisanal coffee and premium liqueurs, reinforcing a sense of Parisian indulgence. Morning departures feature a full breakfast with freshly baked bread, regardless of flight duration, and a dedicated crew member now exclusively serves the business cabin for enhanced attention.

The new porcelain, created by renowned designer Jean-Marie Massaud, mirrors the tableware used in Air France’s intercontinental business class. The contemporary grey trays, also by Massaud, are discreetly signed and add a refined touch to the dining experience.

During our Stockholm departure, LSG Sky Chefs—Air France’s catering partner—invited us to sample the two featured main courses: a Scandinavian-inspired seafood dish and a fragrant Asian-style chicken. Both options are now standard on flights over 2 hours and 15 minutes, representing a notable upgrade from the previously single-option menu.

Economy Class travelers continue to enjoy complimentary croissants or sandwiches, with sweet or savory snacks tailored to the flight time and duration. On longer sectors like Stockholm–Paris, a more substantial hot meal is provided. Complimentary soft drinks, beer, and wine remain integral to the experience.

Air France maintains its commitment to complimentary inflight dining in economy, a tradition rooted in French hospitality. According to Alain Hervé Bernard, Head of Medium-Haul, customer expectations for onboard meals remain high. While cost efficiencies are sought elsewhere, the airline is exploring the introduction of premium add-ons, such as pre-orderable gourmet selections, to further enhance the journey.

Premium Economy has become Economy Flex

With the recent phase-out of premium economy on European routes, Air France has introduced Economy Flex, specifically tailored for business travelers seeking flexibility. Economy Flex fares include Sky Priority for expedited airport services and fully changeable tickets for peace of mind.

Onboard, Economy Flex guests are seated at the front of the economy cabin, enjoying a quieter environment with standard economy service. This arrangement is similar to KLM’s Economy Comfort product. Flying Blue Gold and Platinum members are also eligible for seat selection in this exclusive section, ensuring additional comfort for frequent flyers.

New seats on board

Beginning in 2025, Air France is rolling out new ergonomic leather seating across its Airbus A319 and A320 fleet. The upgrade includes all classes, with the first phase focusing on 24 A319 aircraft, followed by the A320s. This fleet-wide refresh will see over 7,800 seats replaced with the latest models.

Passengers in the forward rows benefit from a generous 30-inch seat pitch, while standard rows offer 29 inches. This thoughtful differentiation provides added space for those seated at the front, appealing to premium leisure and business travelers alike.

Testing Internet on board

Air France continues to innovate by expanding inflight Wi-Fi across its medium-haul fleet, partnering with leading telecom providers to deliver seamless connectivity. Travelers on select Airbus A320s can now access high-speed internet, manage emails, and stream live TV or series during their journey. The airline has rolled out this service on an increasing number of aircraft, with positive feedback from frequent flyers and business travelers alike.
