Lufthansa introduces new fare concept with a new ticket for passengers with only hand luggage

Lufthansa has redefined its European fare model, catering to the evolving preferences of today’s premium and value-focused travelers by introducing a new ticket category for those journeying with only cabin baggage.

Based on insights shared by Lufthansa's Chief Commercial Officer Jens Bischof, nearly one in three passengers opt to travel with just hand luggage. The airline’s updated fare structure empowers cost-conscious guests to personalize their journey by selecting only the services they desire.

Since October 1, Lufthansa has offered three fare categories for flights within Europe:

Light

,

Classic

, and

Flex

.

The newly introduced Economy Light fare is designed for travelers flying with only carry-on bags. Return tickets start at 89 euros. Checked baggage can be added from 15 euros per flight segment, depending on route, while seat selection is available from 10 euros.

The Classic and Flex fares both include a checked baggage allowance of up to 23 kg. Flex goes further, offering complimentary ticket changes, advance seat selection, and a 50% bonus on Miles & More points accrual.

Onboard service remains consistent across all fares: guests in Light continue to enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages.

Business class has also been enhanced. All Lufthansa business fares on European routes are now fully flexible, allowing unrestricted changes and cancellations. If the original fare class isn’t available, passengers may pay the fare difference to upgrade to a higher class, subject to availability.

This innovative fare model has been rolled out across the Lufthansa Group, including Austrian Airlines and Swiss, ensuring a harmonized experience for frequent flyers. Tickets are available year-round for intra-European travel; these changes do not impact long-haul or intercontinental services.

Jens Bischof, Member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board and Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, commented:  “Our customers increasingly value the ability to select and pay for only the services they need. This new fare structure delivers unprecedented flexibility, empowering each guest to craft a bespoke travel experience with Lufthansa.”
