Eurowings, the dynamic subsidiary of Lufthansa, now operates long-haul flights from Germany to Asia, the Middle East, and the Caribbean, redefining affordable premium travel. Utilizing a modern Airbus A330-200 fleet with three distinct cabin classes, Eurowings introduces a business model that marks a bold evolution for the Lufthansa Group.
Building on the cost-effective legacy of Germanwings, Eurowings delivers exceptional value with an emphasis on quality and elevated comfort, including a premium cabin option. The airline strategically connects secondary cities—avoiding Lufthansa’s traditional Frankfurt and Munich hubs—while positioning itself for future growth in markets such as Austria and Switzerland. Cologne/Bonn serves as the launchpad for the initial five long-haul routes: Varadero, Punta Cana, Dubai, Phuket, and Bangkok. The carrier has also established a new operational hub in Vienna, with plans to expand the A330-200 fleet from two to seven aircraft to meet growing demand.
Karl Ulrich Garnadt, then CEO of Lufthansa, introduced the fresh vision for Eurowings, emphasizing the brand’s international aspirations.
Under this strategy, Eurowings has assumed responsibility for sales and marketing from the Germanwings brand, which continues to operate flights under the Eurowings name. The rebrand signals a global outlook, making the airline more accessible to international travelers—particularly those outside Europe, such as customers in Thailand seeking direct service to Europe.
Ticket and cabin classes
Eurowings’ long-haul service features three ticket categories, each paired with a unique onboard experience tailored to different traveler needs.
Eurowings Basic
offers the most economical fare, covering only carry-on baggage. Travelers can add extras—such as checked luggage, meals, beverages, and flexible ticket changes—for an additional fee.
The Basic/Smart section accommodates up to 243 guests, featuring seats with 30-inch (76 cm) pitch and a 10 cm recline for comfort on long journeys.
Eurowings Smart Basic
Eurowings Smart
is designed for passengers seeking additional perks. This fare includes one checked bag, a curated meal service (featuring both hot and cold dishes), and complimentary beverages. Elite members of Miles & More (Frequent Traveller, Senator, HON Circle) enjoy lounge access and can accrue loyalty points. Flexible ticket holders benefit from free rebooking and cancellation.
Smart fare guests are seated in the forward section of economy, with enhanced 34-inch legroom and a more generous 15 cm seat recline (compared to the standard 10 cm). There are 46 of these upgraded seats available, providing extra comfort and convenience.
Eurowings Basic Smart More Comfort
Eurowings Best
represents the airline’s premium product. Passengers enjoy an exclusive cabin at the front, significantly more legroom, and advanced seating. The Best fare includes two checked bags, two pieces of hand luggage, priority check-in, fast-track security, lounge access, an à la carte dining experience, and full access to the in-flight entertainment system. Miles & More members earn both award and HON Circle points when traveling in Best.
Complimentary WiFi is available for Best guests, and the entertainment system features a wide array of standard and premium content—the latter at no extra charge for Best travelers. Every seat is equipped with a USB port and high-definition personal screens.
Eurowings Best
The Best cabin comprises 21 seats arranged in three rows (2-3-2 layout), each offering a generous 45-inch (114 cm) seat pitch. This is the same advanced seat found in Lufthansa’s latest premium economy, reimagined in Eurowings’ signature burgundy tones.
For reference, when these routes launched, sample one-way fares between Cologne and Dubai started at 99.99 EUR for Basic, 149.99 EUR for Smart, and 399.99 EUR for Best.

Test of the new Eurowings Best seat
We had early access to the innovative Eurowings Best seat immediately after its debut, experiencing firsthand the blend of comfort and design. While the seat closely mirrors Lufthansa’s acclaimed premium economy model, Eurowings has introduced its own flair with burgundy accents and enhanced legroom. Officially, the seat offers a spacious 45-inch pitch—substantially more than the 38 inches found in Lufthansa’s premium economy.
During our evaluation, the seat proved exceptionally comfortable for extended travel. Feedback from fellow passengers was equally positive: the space felt generous in both width and legroom, though it is not intended to rival a true business class product. One minor concern: when the seat in front is fully reclined, those behind may find it slightly restrictive for working or exiting the row. However, the expanded legroom in Eurowings Best addresses many of these issues, making it easier to move and minimizing the impact of recline on neighboring passengers.
The enhanced Best seat in Eurowings’ A330 fleet is both supportive and inviting, ideal for overnight flights or daytime journeys alike.
