On Thursday, February 2nd, Lufthansa proudly introduced the Airbus A350-900 XWB (Extra Wide Body) to its global fleet—a milestone in modern aviation. As the tenth carrier worldwide to welcome this advanced aircraft, Lufthansa officially took delivery on December 19th, 2016. The airline has committed to a total of 25 A350-900s, with the initial 10 based in Munich and serving routes to Delhi and Boston. The inaugural commercial flight to Delhi was scheduled for February 10th. The decision regarding the home base for the remaining 15 aircraft—whether Munich or Frankfurt—remains under review.
Initially, these next-generation A350s are replacing older A330 and A340 models on select long-haul routes. Notably, this transition means First Class is not available on A350-operated flights, as Lufthansa has focused on elevating its Business, Premium Economy, and Economy Class offerings.
The A350-900 features a carefully considered cabin layout: 48 Business Class seats, 21 in Premium Economy, and 224 in Economy. While the Business and Premium Economy seats mirror those found throughout Lufthansa’s fleet, Economy Class debuts a refreshed seat design exclusive to the A350.

The A350 is equipped with a fully revamped inflight entertainment system, featuring an expanded library of approximately 100 films and 200 television programs. Passengers benefit from larger high-definition screens and a streamlined, modern user interface for effortless navigation.
Lufthansa has also rolled out a dedicated digital platform, enabling travelers to preview and curate their personal entertainment playlists up to six weeks before departure. Real-time news and sports are accessible via live TV or the complimentary FlyNet portal, ensuring passengers stay connected throughout the journey.
Innovative LED lighting technology sets the mood onboard, offering 24 unique pre-programmed scenarios. These lighting schemes are scientifically designed to help align passengers’ circadian rhythms and minimize jetlag, creating a calming and restorative atmosphere.

Stepping into the A350 cabin, the sense of spaciousness is immediately apparent. The thoughtfully designed overhead bins maximize storage without encroaching on the open feel, contributing to an airy and modern environment.
Business and Premium Economy seating on the A350 is consistent with the broader Lufthansa fleet, ensuring a familiar and refined experience.
The 48 Business Class seats are configured in a 2-2-2 arrangement. While offering plush comfort and direct aisle access for most passengers, taller travelers may find the fully flat bed a touch snug. The seat remains supportive and well-cushioned. Unique to the A350, a self-serve snack and beverage bar is available for Business Class guests seeking refreshments between meals. Traditional at-seat service remains available for those who prefer a curated touch.

Premium Economy is arranged in a 2-3-2 format, delivering generous legroom and enhanced comfort. Front row seats offer full leg support, while subsequent rows are fitted with convenient footrests, catering to the needs of discerning leisure and business travelers alike.

Economy Class adopts a 3-3-3 layout, with the newly designed seats providing improved ergonomics. However, taller individuals may find legroom somewhat limited on longer flights. The seat base slides forward as you recline, optimizing comfort within the available space.
For those seeking extra space, exit row seats in rows 16 and 27 are recommended. Additionally, seats 18C, 18H, 28A, and 28K—located behind the exit rows—offer unobstructed legroom due to the absence of a seat in front. Please note that these seats have fixed armrests due to tray tables and entertainment screens being integrated into the armrest, which slightly narrows the seat width.

The Airbus A350 represents the pinnacle of cutting-edge aviation technology and has been a staple of Lufthansa’s fleet for nearly a decade. Powered by advanced Rolls-Royce Trent engines, the aircraft boasts a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to previous models, along with a 50% decrease in takeoff and landing noise—demonstrating Lufthansa’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and passenger comfort.
Visually, the A350 stands apart with its distinctive upward-curving wingtips and a lower nose profile, both engineered for superior aerodynamic efficiency. The signature black cockpit window surround is a stylistic touch, enhancing the aircraft’s modern aesthetic.
