Major expansion plans for Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport

Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) in Dubai has undergone a sweeping transformation, spearheaded by Jaber LEGT Engineering and Contracting LLC, positioning the airport as a future-ready aviation gateway.

Phase one of the ambitious development saw the Passenger Terminal Building more than double in size—from 66,107 square metres to an impressive 145,926 square metres. Since 2017, the airport has continued to evolve, with further enhancements now making it capable of welcoming up to 26.5 million travelers annually in 2025, a dramatic leap from its original 5 million passenger capacity.

Dubai has cemented its status as a preeminent international aviation crossroads. Complementing Dubai International Airport (DXB)—which recently unveiled the $1.2 billion Concourse D—the expansion at DWC is designed to help ease congestion at DXB, now operating near its 90 million annual passenger threshold.

The same contractor, ALEC, delivered DXB’s Concourse D, setting the standard for seamless passenger flows and premium amenities. The ongoing expansion at Al Maktoum International ensures Dubai stays ahead of global demand, supporting both tourism and business growth.

Among the new highlights, the arrivals facility now features a contemporary public arrivals hall, state-of-the-art baggage claim, and an expanded immigration area with 55 border control counters, streamlined visa services, and advanced baggage screening technology.

For departures, travelers benefit from an enlarged public hall, enhanced retail and commercial offerings, and a reimagined check-in experience. The terminal now boasts 100 check-in counters—90 dedicated to Economy Class and 10 to Business Class—alongside seven self-service kiosks for economy and four for business travelers. Additional upgrades include 26 passport control points (with six e-gate channels for expedited clearance) and 24 modern boarding lounges.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum remarked: “This expansion is a pivotal investment in Dubai’s continued prosperity, delivering a world-class airport that not only meets rising passenger volumes but also elevates the travel experience. We are committed to building facilities and services that set new industry benchmarks, attracting global carriers and discerning passengers alike.”
