Meliá Hotels to open five-star property in Iran

In a landmark move for luxury travel in the Middle East, Spanish hospitality giant Meliá Hotels has officially entered the Iranian market with the unveiling of Gran Meliá Ghoo—setting a new benchmark as the first internationally branded five-star resort in the country.

Rising 130 meters above the pristine shores of the Caspian Sea, Gran Meliá Ghoo is the crown jewel of Iran’s most ambitious mixed-use development, currently taking shape in the vibrant city of Salman Shahr.

This exquisite 319-room property is meticulously designed to deliver the elevated standards synonymous with the Gran Meliá brand. Guests can indulge in seven distinct restaurants and lounges, experience over 1,300 m² of state-of-the-art meeting and event spaces, unwind in two indoor swimming pools, rejuvenate at a world-class spa, and discover premium leisure and retail outlets—all within the complex.

The expansive development also includes two luxury residential towers, a cutting-edge sports facility, ample parking, and a contemporary shopping mall, which is already welcoming visitors and shoppers from across the region.

Meliá’s strategic entry into Iran comes at a time of renewed optimism for the nation’s tourism sector, following the easing of international restrictions. Iran’s government projects inbound tourism will exceed 20 million annual visitors by 2025, a dramatic rise from previous figures of around 5 million.

“We have a proud tradition of pioneering new frontiers in global hospitality,” said Gabriel Escarrer, Vice Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International. “Participating in a visionary project of this scale during such a pivotal moment for Iran’s tourism industry is both an honor and a testament to our commitment to excellence.”

Escarrer added, “Our trust in Iran’s tourism potential is unwavering, and we are delighted to collaborate with local partners to deliver a flagship hotel that reflects both international prestige and local authenticity.”

The 319-room Gran Meliá Ghoo stands as a symbol of the Caspian Coast’s transformation into a premier destination for discerning travelers.

Notably, AccorHotels paved the way for global brands in Iran with the opening of Novotel IKIA and ibis IKIA at Tehran’s international airport, establishing a foundation for further international investment in the country’s hospitality landscape.
