As Lufthansa commemorates 60 years of in-flight Oktoberfest festivities, the airline is delighting passengers with an exclusive retro experience. This year, select crews are donning meticulously recreated 1950s Bavarian uniforms, reviving the golden era of aviation and paying homage to the origins of this cherished tradition.
Back in the 1950s, lucky travelers aboard Lufthansa’s Super Constellation flights between Hamburg and New York, or Convair routes connecting Munich and London, were greeted by cabin crew dressed in authentic Dirndls—a gesture that quickly became a passenger favorite and set Lufthansa apart in the early days of transatlantic travel.
In 2025, this nostalgic celebration takes to the skies once again, with special Oktoberfest-themed flights scheduled for Charlotte, Vancouver, and Dubai. On select dates, fourteen dedicated crew members will board flights to Charlotte, Vancouver, and Dubai, dressed in traditional attire that brings a vintage flair to modern aviation.
Within Europe, Lufthansa CityLine is also embracing the Bavarian spirit; on various routes, three crew members will serve in heritage costumes, while Munich Airport joins the celebration. Here, select service teams wear traditional clothing, and airport lounges offer authentic Bavarian delicacies for guests. In First Class, travelers are treated to a curated Oktoberfest menu, featuring gourmet regional specialties and premium beverages to mark the occasion.
The throwback uniforms have been expertly crafted by Munich’s renowned Angermaier Trachten, blending historical accuracy with contemporary comfort. The Wiesn-Dirndl for flight attendants is a soft blue with elegant beige patterns, paired with a beige apron accented by subtle blue dots—faithful to the original designs from six decades ago.
Period press coverage captured the excitement: “Lufthansa stewardesses in authentic Dirndls will serve guests on Super Constellation flights between New York and Hamburg, as well as on Convair flights linking London and Munich, celebrating Munich’s Oktoberfest in the skies.”
