On Tuesday, May 30th, Singapore Airlines officially inaugurated its highly anticipated direct service connecting Stockholm and Singapore. BusinessClass was on location at Stockholm Arlanda Airport to cover the ceremonial launch and had the privilege of experiencing the inaugural flight aboard Arlanda’s first-ever scheduled Airbus A350-900 departure to Asia.
Stockholm continues to flourish as a dynamic European capital, and its relationship with Singapore is more robust than ever. Singapore serves as a vital commercial gateway for Swedish exports, with over 300 Swedish enterprises now maintaining operations in the Lion City. The route also supports a thriving academic exchange, with numerous bilateral university programs fostering student mobility. For discerning travelers, Singapore is a premier access point to Southeast Asian destinations and beyond.
Arlanda Airport is currently in the midst of a transformative expansion, with significant investments dedicated to modernizing infrastructure. New enhancements include an advanced passenger pier, upgraded security screening, expanded cargo capabilities, and the capacity to accommodate next-generation widebody aircraft—addressing surging passenger traffic and solidifying Arlanda’s status as a leading European aviation hub. Swedavia, which manages Sweden’s key airports, has reaffirmed its vision of positioning Arlanda at the forefront of the continent’s air travel landscape.
The launch event drew prominent dignitaries including Sweden’s EU Minister, senior executives from SAS and Swedavia, and Singapore Airlines’ leadership team. The introduction of the Stockholm-Singapore route offers the fastest direct air connection between Sweden and Southeast Asia.
“Adding Stockholm to our European network is a strategic milestone. Singapore Airlines now serves 15 destinations in 11 European countries,” shared Mr. Subhas Menon, Regional Vice President Europe for Singapore Airlines, during the opening remarks. “We have deployed the state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900 on this route—one of the world’s most eco-efficient aircraft, constructed with advanced composite materials for optimal fuel savings.” The Stockholm service marks the debut of the A350-900 in scheduled operations from Sweden.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony reflected the occasion’s significance, with speeches from Sweden’s EU Minister Ann Linde, Singapore’s Ambassador to Sweden Mr. Quek Poh Huat, Swedavia CEO Jonas Abrahamsson, and SAS Vice President Hans Ollongren. Together with Singapore Airlines’ management, these leaders officially launched the new direct connection, ushering in a new chapter for transcontinental travel between Scandinavia and Asia.
