Qantas upgraded superjumbo takes to the skies

The newly enhanced Qantas A380 has officially entered service, setting a new benchmark for luxury and comfort on the iconic superjumbo.

Following a comprehensive multi-million dollar refurbishment of all 12 A380s in its fleet, Qantas now delivers an elevated inflight experience across every cabin. The transformation features reimagined Business and expanded Premium Economy cabins, refreshed First Class suites, and upgraded Economy seating. The signature on-board lounge has been entirely re-envisioned, offering a sophisticated social space in the sky.

Optimized cabin design now dedicates the entire upper deck to premium travelers, with Business and Premium Economy exclusively occupying this sought-after real estate. The new configuration reduces the number of Economy seats by 30 and increases the premium seat count by 27 percent, directly responding to evolving passenger demand for comfort and exclusivity.

Highlights of the A380 upgrade program include:

  • Introduction of the acclaimed Qantas Business Suite, replacing the legacy Skybeds, in a spacious 1-2-1 layout—guaranteeing direct aisle access for every guest.
  • Installation of the advanced Premium Economy seat, first seen on the Dreamliner, with capacity expanded from 35 to 60 seats for greater availability.
  • A significantly enlarged on-board lounge, now accommodating up to 10 First and Business passengers in a refined setting for relaxation or networking.
  • First Class Suites refreshed with ergonomic cushioning, premium materials, and upgraded entertainment systems featuring larger, ultra-high-definition screens.
  • Economy Class enhancements including a contemporary color scheme and a state-of-the-art inflight entertainment platform.

The inaugural upgraded aircraft, registration VH-OQK, launched on the flagship QF2 London–Singapore–Sydney route, delivering the new experience to discerning travelers.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce emphasized that the extensive mid-life upgrade secures the A380’s reputation as a passenger favorite, stating in a company release:

“Our A380 remains integral to Qantas’ long-haul strategy, and this investment ensures guests enjoy unparalleled comfort and innovation for years ahead.”

“The increase in Business and Premium Economy reflects the substantial growth in demand for premium cabins on our international network.”

“Through close collaboration with Airbus, we’ve maximized every inch of cabin space, improving both operational efficiency and the passenger experience across all classes.”

“Upon completion, our entire fleet of A380s, A330s, and 787s will feature the latest generation of Qantas seating and amenities.”

Refurbishment of each A380 takes around eight weeks, with the entire upgrade program completed in 2021. The reconfigured A380 now offers 14 First Suites (unchanged), 70 Business Suites (an increase of six), 60 Premium Economy seats (up by 25), and 341 Economy seats (reduced by 30), for a total of 485 guests—perfectly balancing capacity and comfort.

Qantas’ renewed A380 fleet continues to be a cornerstone of its premium long-haul service, offering a seamless blend of Australian hospitality and world-class amenities for the modern traveler.
