Qatar Airways Business Class - a solution to a fear of flying?

For those who struggle with aviophobia, even the thought of air travel can trigger overwhelming anxiety. Booking a flight often comes with sleepless nights, racing thoughts, and the kind of dread that overshadows the anticipation of a new adventure. I’ve lived with this fear for years, but my passion for discovery outweighs my hesitation. Friends and colleagues are frequently surprised: “How do you travel so much if you’re afraid of flying?” The answer is simple—sheer determination and a longing to explore the world.

So, when a close friend relocated to Singapore, I knew I had to visit, despite my misgivings about flying. After weeks of scouring flights, an online advert for Qatar Airways Business Class caught my eye: bespoke fares to Singapore. I quickly compared options and, surprisingly, found a Business Class ticket that fit within my 10,000 SEK (about £900) budget—only marginally more than Economy. The decision was made: I booked the Oslo-Doha-Singapore route in Business Class, departing in March. My heart pounded as I confirmed my reservation, nerves mingling with excitement.

Background:

My journey began with a smooth train ride to Oslo Airport via Vy (formerly NSB). Qatar Airways’ dedicated Business Class check-in is located at the far end of the terminal—a brisk walk from the train platform. The signature burgundy carpet and attentive staff set the tone for a premium experience. My self-printed boarding pass proved problematic at security, but the check-in team swiftly replaced it with an embossed pass in a distinctive burgundy envelope, signaling my entry into the world of Business Class.

Fast Track security provided a welcome reprieve from the usual airport chaos, allowing me to breeze through without queueing. For travelers who find crowds overwhelming, this is a significant benefit. I retreated to the OSL Lounge, seeking solace from the bustling departure hall. While weekends are typically quieter, the lounge offered a peaceful oasis even on a busy Saturday. I settled into a secluded chair, finding a rare moment of calm before boarding.

Boarding was called, and I made my way to the gate, passing through passport control before entering the exclusive Business Class lane. At that moment, I was the only Business passenger boarding—a rare privilege. Qatar Airways’ crew, renowned for their hospitality (the airline remains a Skytrax World’s Best Business Class winner in 2025), welcomed me warmly and guided me to my seat, 4A, at the front of the Boeing 787. A glass of chilled champagne was promptly offered, and the cabin, only half full, felt serene compared to the packed Economy section. Boarding was completed swiftly; however, a minor slot delay kept us on the ground for an additional 15 minutes before takeoff.

At the airport:

Once airborne, I began to relax and truly appreciate the environment. The Business Class seat on the Dreamliner is a cocoon of privacy and comfort—ergonomically designed with plush upholstery, it transforms into a fully lie-flat bed at the touch of a button. Multiple storage compartments, adjustable lighting, and ample legroom contribute to a sense of personal space rarely found in the sky. Menus for the curated dine-on-demand service and an extensive wine list awaited at my seat.

The entertainment system features a 15-inch HD screen with a vast array of recent blockbusters, classics, and international selections. During my flights, I watched the latest releases and enjoyed retro favorites, all navigated via an intuitive handheld controller. A moving map and, on the Airbus A350-900, tail and nose cameras, offered unique views of the journey. The provided noise-cancelling headphones enveloped me in sound—my first pair malfunctioned, but the crew replaced them within minutes, ensuring uninterrupted enjoyment.

Amenity kits in partnership with luxury brands included an eye mask, socks, hydrating lip balm, and Acqua di Gio toiletries for men (with a dedicated women's version). The Dreamliner’s dynamic LED mood lighting eased the transition between time zones, and the cabin’s low noise levels made for an exceptionally restful experience. Being able to fully recline and stretch out transformed my perception of long-haul travel.

Upon landing in Doha, Business Class guests were whisked away in a dedicated bus directly to the terminal, further enhancing the sense of exclusivity. The Al Mourjan Business Lounge—recently refreshed and still regarded as one of the world’s top airport lounges—offered a tranquil haven above the bustling concourse. Spacious and elegantly appointed, the lounge features quiet zones, a full-service restaurant, and a café with à la carte and buffet options, including gourmet salads, sandwiches, and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks served by attentive staff.

Facilities include private rooms for rest, prayer spaces, and a business center equipped for productivity between flights. A unique element: the lounge’s restrooms are staffed by attendants who meticulously clean each cubicle before use, offering fresh towels upon exit. This level of detail underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to luxury and hygiene, making the stopover a restorative part of the journey.

On board:

The onward journey from Doha to Singapore operates on a flagship Airbus A350-900, which is now fitted with Qatar Airways’ award-winning Qsuite Business Class on select flights. On my segment, the cabin was at full capacity, and my seat, 7A, was positioned near the main boarding door. While this location meant every passenger passed by, the privacy divider and thoughtful cabin layout minimized disturbances once boarding was complete.

This leg included upgraded amenities: a set of soft pyjamas in addition to the luxury amenity kit. The personalized service and calm ambiance remained consistent throughout. The aircraft felt fresh and modern; the Dreamliner from Oslo to Doha was the oldest in my journey, yet even it exuded contemporary comfort.

After returning to Oslo from Singapore, a single question lingered: how could I ever return to Economy? The journey home mirrored the outbound experience—seamless, serene, and restorative. Qatar Airways’ Business Class consistently delivered on its promise of luxury and care.

Just days later, I found myself back in Economy on a short-haul flight to London. The familiar unease crept back in, a stark contrast to the tranquility I experienced in Business Class. Is premium travel a cure for flight anxiety? Perhaps not a universal solution, but for me, the elevated comfort, personal space, and attentive service of Qatar Airways Business Class significantly eased my fears and made the journey as memorable as the destination itself.
