Vistara, India’s premium full-service airline, is rapidly capturing international attention as it expands its global presence with the introduction of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline recently unveiled its first Dreamliner at an exclusive event in New Delhi, showcasing its next-generation cabins designed for discerning travelers.
Founded in 2013 through a strategic partnership between Singapore Airlines and Tata Sons, Vistara commenced operations in 2015 with its inaugural New Delhi–Mumbai service. Following the exit of Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways, Vistara has become the benchmark for full-service excellence within India’s domestic market. Since launching international services in 2019 with Boeing 737-800NG aircraft, Vistara has steadily broadened its network. The arrival of the Boeing 787-9 marks a significant leap, with several Dreamliners now in active service and more scheduled for delivery throughout 2025 as Vistara continues its ambitious expansion beyond the Indian subcontinent. The airline now connects over 40 destinations, reflecting its rapid growth trajectory.
Due to Indian aviation regulations, foreign ownership in domestic airlines is limited to 49%, resulting in Vistara’s current structure: 49% held by Singapore Airlines and 51% by Tata Sons. Notably, Tata’s roots in Indian aviation date back to the 1930s with Tata Airlines, which evolved into Air India after nationalization in 1953.
Singapore Airlines has long been the preferred carrier for journeys linking India with Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. However, connecting India to Europe and North America required a more direct solution. Vistara, with its combined expertise from Tata and Singapore Airlines, strategically fills this gap. The airline now operates long-haul flights to London, Paris, and Tokyo, among other global hubs, leveraging the Dreamliner’s range and passenger comfort. Initial months saw the 787-9 deployed on domestic sectors for crew training, but the aircraft now serves flagship international routes.
Vistara’s Business Class aboard the Dreamliner is a showcase of contemporary luxury, echoing the best of global aviation design. The seats, manufactured by Stelia Aerospace, are akin to those found in Singapore Airlines’ 787-10 and A350-900 regional products and Turkish Airlines’ long-haul Dreamliners, but feature Vistara’s bespoke aesthetic. Guests enjoy plush grey leather upholstery with refined red accents, enveloped by a private shell with velvet trim and personalized reading lights. The 1-2-1 configuration ensures direct aisle access for every passenger, while the fully lie-flat seats and 18-inch touchscreen entertainment system with intuitive remote control elevate the in-flight experience. Premium Economy and Economy cabins continue the modern design language, offering comfort and style across all classes.
