SAS has finalized a lease agreement with Air Lease Corporation (ALC) to introduce three state-of-the-art Airbus A321LR aircraft into its growing fleet. This strategic move empowers SAS to broaden its intercontinental offerings, providing travelers with more nonstop connections and reduced travel times between Scandinavia and key global destinations. The inaugural A321LR entered commercial service in early 2020, with all three aircraft now fully integrated into SAS operations.
The Airbus A321LR is a next-generation, single-aisle jet engineered for extended-range flights—well beyond the reach of the standard A321neo. This aircraft’s impressive range enables direct services from Scandinavia to the Northeastern United States, a market of significant importance for SAS, as well as to a variety of destinations in Canada, the Middle East, and India.
“Introducing the A321LR to our fleet marks a new chapter for SAS, aligning perfectly with Scandinavian travel preferences and demand patterns. We are excited to utilize this versatile aircraft to inaugurate new routes and assess its operational performance,” shares Anko van der Werff, President and CEO, SAS.
SAS traditionally operated wide-body jets accommodating up to 266 guests on intercontinental sectors. The more compact A321LR offers the flexibility to launch routes to emerging destinations or serve established cities from secondary Scandinavian airports, facilitating greater connectivity. Currently, SAS’s long-haul services originate from the capitals of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
This aircraft is part of Airbus’s latest eco-efficient generation, delivering a significant reduction in emissions. The A321LR mirrors the A320neo’s environmental performance, shrinking its carbon footprint by approximately 17% compared to older models of similar capacity.
“Sustainability is at the heart of our vision for aviation’s future. SAS remains committed to pioneering responsible travel, with a clear goal of cutting our carbon emissions by 25% by 2030,” van der Werff emphasizes.
SAS has finalized both the initial route network and the premium cabin configuration for the A321LR, with these new services now available to travelers. The airline continues to optimize its schedule and onboard experience as part of its ongoing commitment to excellence and sustainability.
