Singapore Airlines’ reintegration of narrowbody jets into its premium fleet marks a significant evolution for regional travelers. The full absorption of SilkAir under the Singapore Airlines brand brings a suite of elevated experiences, setting new standards in short- and medium-haul luxury.
After years of strategic planning, SilkAir’s transition into Singapore Airlines is now complete. Passengers can now expect a unified brand experience, with aircraft repainted in Singapore Airlines’ iconic livery, crew donning the elegant sarong kebaya, and elevated in-flight offerings aligned with the flagship’s renowned standards.
While narrowbody cabins traditionally lack the spaciousness of widebody aircraft, Singapore Airlines has implemented a series of thoughtful enhancements to bridge this gap. SilkAir’s legacy of full-service operations has been elevated: refreshed seat upholstery, upgraded catering, and the signature service ethos now mirror what travelers enjoy on Singapore’s long-haul routes.
Initial deployments utilize Boeing 737-800s, featuring refurbished SilkAir seats. In Business Class, guests are welcomed by 12 seats with up to 8 inches of recline in a 2-2 layout across three rows. The airline has announced that the latest Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft will soon introduce new-generation seats, including lie-flat beds in Business Class and advanced inflight entertainment systems for every passenger.
Until the arrival of the fully reconfigured cabins, passengers can still enjoy Singapore Airlines’ award-winning KrisWorld entertainment. On the current 737-800s, content is streamed directly to personal devices via the onboard network, even on aircraft without full Wi-Fi connectivity. The airline’s commitment to consistency ensures this will soon be available via individual seatback screens as newer aircraft are delivered or retrofitted.
Culinary excellence remains a hallmark of the Singapore Airlines narrowbody experience. Business Class guests can pre-select gourmet main courses from the acclaimed "Book the Cook" menu, with meals elegantly presented on Narumi porcelain. On flights exceeding 3.5 hours, a curated selection of fresh fruit and artisanal cheeses is served after the main meal, while the airline’s signature satay skewers enhance journeys longer than five hours, including routes such as Singapore to Cairns and Kathmandu.
One of the most significant advantages of the SilkAir integration is the expanded Star Alliance network coverage. Frequent flyers now benefit from enhanced recognition: Star Alliance Gold members enjoy priority check-in, lounge access, and increased baggage allowance on routes previously operated by SilkAir. With more regional destinations now eligible for earning and redeeming loyalty points, travelers have unprecedented opportunities to maximize their membership across Asia.
The inaugural Singapore Airlines Boeing 737-800 flight departed from Changi Airport to Phuket, Thailand, on March 4, 2021, with Bandar Seri Bagewan added shortly after. Since then, the regional network has steadily grown, and passengers in 2025 can look forward to a seamless and elevated journey—whether flying for business or leisure—on one of the world’s most respected carriers.
