The Peninsula New York Showcases '80s Art Exhibition Featuring Work By Andy Warhol

The Peninsula New York commemorates over three decades of luxury hospitality by presenting a sophisticated art exhibition featuring influential artists from the 1980s, including the legendary Andy Warhol.

Since its grand opening in 1998, The Peninsula New York has set the standard for five-star accommodations in Manhattan. The current exhibition, thoughtfully integrated throughout the hotel’s elegant public spaces, highlights original masterpieces by Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Barbara Kruger.

Guests can also appreciate three striking portraits of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, captured by renowned photographer Michael Halsband during the artists’ memorable visit to his studio in July 1985, adding an intimate dimension to the showcase.

One of the highlights includes ten authenticated screen prints from Andy Warhol’s iconic “Campbell’s Soup” series, prominently displayed in the upper lobby seating area and available for viewing until late October.

Warhol’s acclaimed “Chairman Mao” series—a collection of ten vividly colored, monumental portraits—now adorns the Gotham Lounge walls, creating an immersive visual experience for visitors through the end of August.

Additional Warhol pieces on exhibit through October include “Sausage Tree” (1986), “Toy Painting Robot” (1981), and “Diamond Dusk Candy Box” (1981), all showcased in the upper lobby, reflecting Warhol’s diverse creative range.

Keith Haring’s dynamic pop art and signature graffiti style, which rose to prominence in New York’s subways during the 1980s, are front and center. Upon entry, guests are greeted by Haring’s commanding “Untitled,” a large-scale work in red and black metal that energizes the lower lobby.

Other notable Haring pieces, including “Untitled Subway Drawing” (1, 1981-1985), a second “Untitled Subway Drawing,” and “Totem” (1981-1982), remain on view throughout the hotel until October’s close.

Italian contemporary artist Francesco Clemente is represented by “Number Five” (1985) and his evocative self-portrait of Andy Warhol (1982-1987), both on display for art aficionados to admire.

Visitors will also encounter Jean-Michel Basquiat’s compelling 1984 “Untitled” work at the entrance to the Gotham Lounge, while Barbara Kruger’s conceptual piece “Untitled, Your Pleasure is Spasmodic and Short Lived” (1980) holds a prominent place in The Palm Court.
