The rise of the ‘bleisure’ traveller: How Brits are mixing business travel with leisure

With British professionals now dedicating an average of five days each month to business travel, a growing number are transforming these obligations into exclusive personal getaways—a trend redefining the modern 'bleisure' traveller.

Fresh insights from leading travel analytics firm Autoeurope.co.uk reveal that one in three UK employees now routinely convert their corporate journeys into extended leisure escapes, seamlessly blending productivity with indulgence.

This shift is especially pronounced among Millennials and Gen Z, who are leveraging work-related travel to maximise value and bespoke experiences. On average, this cohort saves £634 annually by merging holiday time with business commitments, prioritising immersive adventures and premium amenities.

Data from the study shows that 26% of professionals adjust their work schedules on the road to fully explore their destination’s cultural and culinary highlights.

Additionally, over 23% opt for luxury accommodation they might not typically book—taking advantage of corporate rates—while 20% upgrade flights or transport, benefiting from employer-covered expenses.

Loyalty programmes are a significant driver, with 22% arranging meetings to accrue frequent flyer points and rewards, ensuring future personal travel is even more rewarding.

Bleisure is rarely a solo affair: 22% of respondents invite partners or family members to join them, turning business trips into shared, memorable escapes.

Interestingly, the findings indicate that embracing bleisure can foster greater job satisfaction and engagement, with no additional cost to companies.

More than a quarter of participants (26%) report that integrating leisure into work travel enhances the value of their assignments and boosts personal motivation.

An Autoeurope.co.uk representative commented: “Business travel today offers not just professional growth, but also the chance to discover new destinations and cultures. Proactive planning—such as group bookings and streamlined check-ins—ensures that travel remains a sought-after perk, not a workplace burden.”

“While we can’t increase your business travel quota, we are committed to providing exceptional car rental options and competitive rates for anyone seeking elevated value from their bleisure or personal journeys.”
