Introduction
Since its debut in 2014, The Thief has established itself as a cornerstone of Oslo’s luxury hospitality scene. Over the years, we’ve sampled its acclaimed restaurants, enjoyed cocktails at the rooftop bar, and attended stylish business gatherings. This time, we checked in to experience firsthand why The Thief continues to garner accolades as one of Scandinavia’s leading boutique hotels. Promising to whisk guests away from the ordinary, The Thief delivers an immersive urban retreat—an oasis of design, art, and indulgence unlike any other in Norway’s capital. Our latest stay confirms: Oslo’s search for a world-class luxury design hotel ends here.

Prime Waterfront Location & Cultural Access
Nestled on Tjuvholmen—once notorious for its criminal past, now Oslo’s most vibrant arts district—The Thief enjoys a prime setting overlooking the city’s harbor. Just a 10-minute walk from the bustling city center and steps from Aker Brygge’s lively restaurants and bars, the hotel is perfectly positioned for both leisure and business travelers. While the hotel’s direct views are most spectacular from the rooftop terrace, its proximity to the renowned Astrup Fearnley Museum (designed by Renzo Piano) sets it apart—guests enjoy complimentary admission to this landmark of contemporary art. For those seeking outdoor pursuits, a nearby urban beach and swimming in the Oslofjord await, along with easy access to ferries bound for Bygdøy’s iconic museums, including the Viking Ship Museum and the Kon-Tiki. Oslo Central Station is within a 15-minute stroll, providing swift airport connections and seamless exploration of Norway’s capital.
Accommodation: Suites & Rooms with Artistic Flair
For our stay, we selected a one-bedroom suite—though The Thief also offers even more expansive signature suites. Entry-level rooms start at a generous 24 square meters, each featuring a private balcony or terrace. Our suite spanned an impressive 63 square meters, including a spacious living area with a pantry and a second balcony offering panoramic views of the Oslofjord and marina below.
Travelers seeking a more compact but equally stylish experience can opt for the 43-square-meter junior suite. For a truly unique stay, consider the Apparatjik Suite, curated by Magne Furuholmen of A-ha fame, featuring bespoke art and design elements.
Every room and suite at The Thief is thoughtfully designed with warm wooden floors, plush carpets, and a sophisticated color palette of slate, navy, and crimson. Modern touches abound, from marble bathrooms equipped with rainfall showers (bathtubs are reserved for higher room categories) to original artwork displayed in each space. We especially appreciated the luxurious wool slippers, premium Babor amenities, and the exceptionally comfortable beds. The living room’s ambiance is enhanced by a Geneva sound system and, in suites, a concealed 42-inch television that rises at the touch of a button. After dining at the rooftop restaurant, we savored Henriot champagne from the well-stocked minibar, accompanied by curated playlists and fjord views—an experience that truly embodies Nordic luxury.

Service & Amenities: Curated Comfort Meets Nordic Efficiency
While Norwegian hospitality is known for its understated approach, The Thief blends warmth and professionalism. Although luggage assistance is not customary, our welcome at reception was prompt and personable. The concierge team proved highly knowledgeable, offering tailored recommendations for Oslo’s top attractions—from the award-winning opera house to floating saunas on the fjord and even guided ziplining at Holmenkollen. For active guests, world-class ski slopes are just a 20-minute drive from the hotel.
Breakfast service was attentive after a brief wait, with made-to-order omelets arriving swiftly. We were especially impressed by Guest Relations Manager Dominic Gorham, who generously shared insights on the hotel’s acclaimed art collection during a private tour. For those requiring personalized services, the hotel arranges nannies, limousine transfers, pet care, and personal shopping upon request. Around-the-clock room service ensures convenience at any hour.
The Thief Spa remains a highlight, boasting a tranquil pool area with a starlit ceiling and fjord views. Facilities include two Roman baths, a sauna, and invigorating sensory showers. The well-equipped gym features the latest Technogym machines, and guests can book private trainers or bespoke wellness treatments—reflecting The Thief’s commitment to holistic luxury.
Design & Atmosphere: Art-Infused Urban Chic
The Thief’s interiors are a masterclass in contemporary Scandinavian design, exuding a cosmopolitan yet intimate ambiance. Upon entering, guests are greeted by soaring ceilings, dramatic picture windows, and velvet seating atop polished stone floors—evoking the energy of a sophisticated urban lounge.
A striking fireplace anchors the lobby, while a palette of black and gold, moody lighting, and curated art set the tone. Original works by luminaries such as Damien Hirst, Sir Peter Blake, Cindy Sherman, and Richard Prince are displayed throughout—even in the elevators, where playful installations surprise and delight. This immersive art experience is seamlessly woven into every detail, ensuring a stay that is as visually inspiring as it is comfortable.

Dining & Drinks: Oslo’s Rooftop Hotspot
The Thief’s rooftop restaurant, Thief Roof Grill, remains a favorite summer dining destination, offering panoramic city and fjord views in a relaxed, stylish atmosphere.
The rooftop bar is a magnet for Oslo’s fashionable set during the warmer months, serving expertly crafted cocktails and small plates. Breakfast is served on the first floor and features a curated selection of organic produce, freshly squeezed juices, and signature omelets delivered tableside—a testament to the hotel’s focus on quality and seasonal ingredients.
