Virgin Trains has launched its newly redesigned First Class Travel Lounge at Newcastle Central Station, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing £10 million transformation of the East Coast route.
This state-of-the-art facility is the first of eight exclusive lounges between London and Edinburgh to undergo a complete overhaul, offering an elevated environment for discerning travelers. The renovation delivers increased seating capacity and enhanced amenities, setting a new benchmark for station lounges on the route. Further lounges at key stations are scheduled to debut in the coming weeks, aligning with Virgin Trains’ rollout of faster, more frequent services connecting the North East to London.
Guests are welcomed with signature ‘Virgin red’ furnishings, contemporary artwork showcasing iconic UK skylines, and thoughtfully designed spaces for both productivity and relaxation. The lounge features collaborative meeting areas, ergonomic workstations equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi and ample charging points, as well as a curated selection of complimentary refreshments, snacks, and leading newspapers.
With a capacity for up to 68 guests—over three times its previous size—the Newcastle lounge reflects rising demand for premium rail travel, following a 6% increase in First Class bookings since Virgin Trains assumed control of the East Coast line.
Upgrades at Darlington and Berwick lounges are set to be unveiled within days, while London King’s Cross, Edinburgh, Leeds, Wakefield, and Doncaster will soon complete their own Virgin-inspired transformations.
David Horne, Managing Director, commented: “This investment is integral to our vision of redefining the rail experience for all our customers. The North East remains a cornerstone of our network, and we are proud to deliver innovative trains, expanded services, and exceptional station enhancements.”
He continued, “Our £10 million commitment to modernising all 12 of our stations ensures that both First Class and Standard passengers benefit from improved facilities and a more refined travel experience.”
The revitalized lounges build on Virgin Trains’ recent £21 million fleet upgrade, which introduced premium leather seating, bespoke carpeting, and ambient mood lighting in First Class carriages, reinforcing the brand’s reputation for comfort and style.
