What’s Happening At British Airways?

British Airways has embarked on a sweeping £7 billion transformation, targeting every aspect of the customer journey from ground to sky. This ambitious plan follows several challenging years, during which the airline weathered labor disputes, technology outages, and negative press surrounding service cutbacks—including the controversial removal of complimentary tea.

As the global aviation sector rebounds and competition intensifies, British Airways is recalibrating its strategy to reclaim its status among the world’s leading premium carriers. Here’s a comprehensive look at the airline’s current direction, recent enhancements, and what discerning travelers can expect in 2025 and beyond.

Multi-Billion Pound Revitalisation: Where The Investment Goes

Current CEO Sean Doyle has reaffirmed British Airways’ commitment to redefining competitiveness and luxury through targeted investment. Notable allocations include more than £900 million dedicated to upgrading Club World, the long-haul business class suite, while Club Europe enhancements continue to roll out across domestic and European routes. The airline has also debuted refreshed lounges, expedited security and lounge access via the First Wing at Heathrow, and next-generation high-speed Wi-Fi now available across nearly all aircraft.

At recent industry events, Doyle confirmed the airline’s renewed focus on in-flight dining, reinstating a second full meal on select long-haul journeys—a direct response to customer and crew feedback. Importantly, the Club World revamp now commands a record £900 million of the capital plan, signifying a deep commitment to delivering a world-class business class experience.

Evolving Onboard Service: The Future of Buy-On-Board and Customer Feedback

While complimentary snacks in short-haul economy are unlikely to return, Doyle has highlighted significant refinements to the buy-on-board proposition, shaped by extensive passenger and crew consultation.

“We acknowledge that launching buy-on-board catering in Euro Traveller had its challenges. Our initial execution fell short, but we have listened closely to our guests and teams,” Doyle explained.

“Menus have been streamlined, with greater focus on quality and speed of service. Additional crew are rostered on high-demand flights to ensure efficiency. Uptake for our refreshed menu has exceeded projections, and we remain committed to setting a new benchmark for buy-on-board quality in the European market.”

Concorde Room and Global Lounge Upgrades: A New Standard in Airport Luxury

Travelers can already experience the results of BA’s investment at the iconic Concorde Room in Terminal 5, which now showcases a contemporary redesign.

Upgrades feature bespoke furnishings, expanded seating on the terrace, and a significant increase in charging points and connectivity options.

British Airways’ lounge refresh program has extended to New York JFK’s Terminal 7, with further enhancements to check-in and security flow. Additional lounge renovations have been completed at Aberdeen, Rome, and Geneva, with substantial upgrades now available in San Francisco, Johannesburg, Chicago, and across Heathrow’s suite of premium lounges.

The New Club Suite: Direct Aisle Access and Enhanced Privacy

British Airways has now fully deployed its innovative Club Suite, setting a new benchmark for business class comfort and privacy. The Club Suite features a fully flat bed, direct aisle access for every passenger, and a privacy door—key elements for today’s premium traveler.

Following the rollout of luxury bedding and amenity kits in partnership with The White Company, the Club Suite was first introduced on the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787-10 and has since been retrofitted across the flagship long-haul fleet.

The original fully-flat Club World bed debuted in 2000, but the Club Suite’s direct-aisle 1-2-1 layout, increased storage, and 18.5-inch entertainment screens now rival the world’s best. Our firsthand experience confirms the suite delivers a significant leap in both comfort and privacy, a marked improvement over the previous 2-4-2 configuration.

Fleetwide High-Speed Wi-Fi: Seamless Connectivity in the Sky

For today’s luxury traveler, uninterrupted high-speed wifi is essential. British Airways has completed its fleetwide rollout, providing robust connectivity on both short and long-haul routes.

Staying connected is now a given

. Short-haul aircraft utilize advanced ground-based systems, while long-haul jets are equipped with Ka-band satellite technology. Pricing remains competitive, with basic browsing packages starting from £4.99 and full-streaming ‘Connect Plus’ options from £7.99, supporting seamless video and VPN access. The phased installation is now complete, ensuring consistent internet access regardless of route.

Is British Airways Still a Premium Carrier in 2025?

With major investments now realized and more enhancements underway, British Airways is reaffirming its claim as a leading full-service international airline. CEO Sean Doyle remains resolute in steering the carrier towards a premium proposition, despite industry pressures and evolving passenger expectations.

Club World’s new bedding collection

Since assuming leadership, Doyle has faced scrutiny for balancing cost discipline with luxury. He maintains that adaptation is vital for survival amid fierce rivalry from both low-cost disruptors and globally renowned Middle Eastern airlines.

“As Britain’s flag carrier, we must continually reinvent ourselves. Legacy alone offers no protection in today’s aviation landscape. The experiences of airlines like Alitalia are a cautionary tale—innovation and agility are essential,” Doyle noted in a recent address.

While BA is not positioned as a boutique luxury airline, its ongoing investments and service refinements have closed the gap with top-tier competitors. The next few years will determine whether these efforts secure BA’s place among the world’s premier carriers. For now, the airline is well on its way to restoring its storied reputation for excellence.
