China offers Australians visa-free travel

As a result of high-level discussions between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, China has officially extended its visa exemption program to include Australian citizens.

Australian passport holders are now eligible for a complimentary 15-day visa-free entry into China for tourism, business, transit, or family visits. For those planning longer stays, a standard visa remains necessary, with applications typically requiring a minimum of 14 days for processing and a fee of AUD95. This streamlined policy significantly enhances ease of travel between Australia and China, supporting both leisure and corporate travel.

Earlier in 2025, China granted temporary visa-free access to nationals from 12 countries, primarily in Europe, alongside Malaysia. This initiative, which is valid until the end of 2025, aims to revitalize inbound tourism and international business engagement. The eligible countries include Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and Malaysia. Notably, New Zealand was recently incorporated into this list within the past fortnight.

Additionally, China maintains mutual 30-day visa-free agreements with Singapore and Thailand, further facilitating regional mobility.

For U.S. travelers, China has simplified the entry process by removing requirements for invitation letters, hotel confirmations, flight bookings, and detailed itineraries, making travel arrangements more flexible than ever.
