Review of SriLankan Airlines Business Class

SriLankan Airlines, Sri Lanka’s flag carrier, has been a cornerstone of regional and long-haul travel since its inception as Air Lanka in 1979, evolving to its current brand identity in 1998. Operating from its main hub at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, the airline connects passengers to over thirty-five direct destinations across Asia, Europe, Australia, and a robust network within India and the Maldives. Notably, SriLankan remains the top carrier serving the Maldives, including direct flights from London Heathrow to Malé twice weekly.

The airline exclusively operates a modern Airbus fleet—A330, A320, and A321 models—with the A330-300 serving as the flagship for long-haul journeys. The business class cabin on the A330-300 is arranged in seven rows in a 1-2-1 configuration, providing direct aisle access for all passengers and accommodating 28 fully flat seats. Both Economy and Business Class cabins are available, with a focus on comfort and regional flair.

Proudly part of the oneworld alliance, SriLankan Airlines partners with esteemed global carriers such as Qatar Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and others, expanding its reach through strategic codeshare agreements and seamless global connections.

Frequent flyers benefit from the FlySmiLes loyalty program, earning and redeeming miles across the oneworld network. SriLankan Airlines also allows booking business class tickets using British Airways Avios, and a one-way business-class ticket from Male to London via Colombo can cost around 42,500 American Airlines AAdvantage miles. Members enjoy perks such as worldwide lounge access and priority services, enhancing the premium travel experience on both SriLankan and partner airlines. Round-trip cash tickets in business class from Colombo to London averaged about $3,500 in March and April.

Airport experience

Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport is conveniently located about 30 minutes from the heart of Sri Lanka’s capital, making it easily accessible by private transfer.

Business Class travelers are welcomed at the Silk Route, a dedicated premium check-in facility adjacent to the main terminal. The dedicated check-in area for SriLankan Airlines business class passengers offers comfortable seating, attentive staff, and priority boarding, ensuring a smooth and efficient start to the journey. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by attentive SriLankan staff, who handle ticketing and baggage while passengers unwind in plush seating. Personalized escort through security and expedited immigration ensure a seamless pre-flight process, culminating in access to the Business Class lounge.

The Serendib Lounge offers panoramic runway views through large windows overlooking the aircraft parking bay, making it a favorite spot for flight spotters and those who enjoy watching planes on the tarmac. The lounge is relatively small but provides plenty of comfortable seating throughout, and is described as clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully managed. Guests can enjoy a rotating buffet showcasing both Sri Lankan specialties and international favorites, all freshly prepared to high standards, along with a good bar service—though there is no self-service drink option. The lounge also features a shower room for freshening up after the tropical humidity, a rest and relaxation room with recliners, and a tranquil quiet zone for relaxation. However, there is no kids' area, making it less suitable for families. Lounge staff in teal saris add a personal touch by coming to find passengers when boarding begins.

The recently upgraded Serenediva Lounge features an ambient setting and an extensive all-day dining menu, catering to global palates with an emphasis on quality and presentation.

Menus in both lounges change throughout the day, ranging from artisanal pizzas to vibrant curries. The culinary selection is complemented by a full-service bar, including unlimited Piper-Heidsieck Cuvee Brut Champagne, premium spirits, fresh juices, and soft drinks.

A highlight of the lounge experience is the curated Sri Lankan tea selection, served elegantly with options for milk, lemon, or sugar—an authentic touch reflecting the island’s heritage.

While complimentary spa treatments are expected to return soon, guests currently have access to modern shower facilities for refreshment before their flight.

As a member of the oneworld alliance, Business Class passengers enjoy reciprocal lounge privileges at airports worldwide.

FlySmiLes Platinum (oneworld Emerald) members can access First, Business, or frequent flyer lounges, while Gold (Sapphire) members are welcomed into Business or frequent flyer lounges. Both tiers may invite a guest, provided the companion is flying on a oneworld-operated and marketed flight, and many premium travellers compare detailed airline reviews of business and first class cabins before choosing their preferred carrier.

Cabin & Seat

SriLankan Airlines operates a fleet of just over 20 aircraft, with twelve A330s for long-haul journeys and a balanced mix of A320 and A321 models for short and medium-haul flights.

The Business Class cabin is immediately striking, adorned in a palette inspired by Sri Lanka’s vivid landscapes—shades of blue, orange, red, and green—echoed in seat finishes and cabin details. A cream colour palette is used throughout the cabin, contributing to a calm, elegant, and sophisticated atmosphere that complements the other vibrant shades. The interiors are accented with motifs celebrating the nation’s lush flora and vibrant wildlife.

Depending on the aircraft, long-haul Business Class features either 28 or 18 seats.

The flagship A330-300s are the most modern in the fleet, boasting 28 business class seats upholstered in soft leather and arranged in a 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone layout, providing direct aisle access for all passengers and enhanced privacy. These seats recline into a fully flat position, allowing for comfortable sleeping during long-haul flights. Seats extend to a generous 78 inches (198 cm) in bed mode, with a pitch of 47 inches (119 cm). Each suite is equipped with a personal power socket, USB port, coat hook, literature pocket, and ample storage space. While the leather seats offer a premium feel, a mattress topper would enhance sleeping comfort, as the surface can retain warmth. The mood lighting system, inspired by Sri Lanka’s iconic sunsets, and the twinkling ‘starry sky’ ceiling panels elevate the ambiance, giving a sense of open space and tranquility.

Solo travelers will appreciate the privacy of window seats, while the center pairs are ideal for couples and families seeking the best business class seats. The reverse herringbone design does create some distance for conversation in the center seats, which can be an advantage for privacy if seated next to a stranger.

The older A330-200s are configured with 18 forward-facing flatbed seats in a 2-2-2 arrangement, offering a pitch between 77 and 79 inches (196–201 cm). These seats provide ample legroom but less privacy than the newer models. Every seat features a power outlet and USB port. While not the most cutting-edge in the industry, the beds accommodate even tall passengers comfortably.

All Business Class seats are supplied with a plush blanket and a supportive pillow for restful sleep.

Cuisine

The Business Class culinary journey begins with a welcome beverage and warm cashews, setting the stage for a memorable meal. SriLankan Airlines offers a variety of food options in business class, including both Sri Lankan cuisine and Western dishes, all served on white cotton tablecloths with metal cutlery for an elevated dining experience. Menus are thoughtfully curated, with at least four main course choices on every flight, always including a signature Sri Lankan option when departing Colombo.

Kiribath (milk rice), a beloved Sri Lankan breakfast staple, frequently features on morning departures and is consistently a guest favorite. Traditional Sri Lankan dishes such as Milk Rice (Kiribath) with Fish Ambul Thial or Seeni Sambal are available, highlighting the airline's commitment to authentic flavors. Other options are tailored to the route and guest demographics, offering a blend of regional and international dishes.

Selections typically include a choice of meat, seafood, and vegetarian entrees. Passengers can pre-order special meals to suit dietary preferences, and the 'dine on demand' service allows flexibility in meal timing, especially when combined with smart business class travel planning and tips. Be mindful that some dishes are authentically spiced, delivering the bold flavors Sri Lankan cuisine is known for—have a refreshing beverage at hand if you prefer milder tastes! Portions are generous and beautifully presented, with each tray individually served by the attentive crew.

Business class passengers typically receive two meals on longer flights, such as dinner and breakfast or lunch and a lighter snack. Fresh fruit is included as part of the meal service, especially during breakfast or pre-arrival, adding a refreshing and healthy touch to the experience. The main meal is rounded off with a fine cheese selection and decadent desserts.

A premium selection of beverages is available, including the culturally significant Ceylon tea, which enhances the authentic Sri Lankan experience. On longer flights, a second meal is served in a simplified format, with all components presented together for efficiency—mirroring the approach of leading international airlines.

Throughout the flight, a selection of snacks is available on demand, ensuring guests are well cared for at any hour.

Beverages

Business Class guests are welcomed with Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut Champagne, served at your seat prior to departure and available throughout the journey. The wine list features two premium whites, two reds, and a selection of port, along with a curated range of beers, spirits, and liqueurs. Premium whisky options such as Johnnie Walker Black Label are available, highlighting the airline’s commitment to distinguished spirits.

The inflight menu highlights the SriLankan Sky Bar, with bespoke cocktails such as the Classic Colombo Fizz, Coconut Twister, and Botanical Burst—each reflecting Sri Lanka’s vibrant botanicals. The airline also showcases Colombo Gin, a London Dry Gin produced in England using a recipe rooted in Colombo’s Cinnamomum Gardens, featuring indigenous cinnamon bark.

Freshly blended juices, made from local tropical fruits, are a refreshing highlight. Seasonal blends like “pineapple and aloe vera” or “king coconut with coconut pulp” are both nourishing and delicious. Orange juice is also offered, either as a pre-departure drink or during meal service, providing a classic and popular beverage choice.

Tea service is a standout, befitting Sri Lanka’s global reputation for fine teas. Guests can choose from a wide selection, including Earl Grey and English Breakfast, all sourced from Sri Lanka. Tea is elegantly served in individual steel pots with large porcelain cups, and guests may choose between hot or cold milk.

Bottled water is placed at each seat and replenished proactively by the attentive crew throughout the flight.

Service

The SriLankan Airlines cabin crew are instantly recognizable in their elegant Osariya uniforms, adorned with the signature peacock motif. Each crew member we interacted with demonstrated professionalism and a genuine warmth, handling every request—large or small—gracefully and efficiently. While the fleet may not be the newest globally, the crew member's attention to detail and positive attitude set a high standard in the region. However, it's worth noting that service in SriLankan Airlines' business class can be inconsistent, with some passengers experiencing excellent service while others report less attentive crew.

The flight attendants are fluent in English and display excellent training, often bringing a touch of local personality to the experience. As the primary providers of hospitality, flight attendants manage passenger needs with care, ensuring privacy when desired and regularly checking in to maintain comfort and satisfaction. While many travelers praise the friendly and professional cabin crew, some report variability in service consistency between flights.

Entertainment

All A330-300s, A320neo, and A321neo aircraft are equipped with noise-cancelling headphones that deliver crisp audio quality—an essential for immersive entertainment at altitude.

The inflight entertainment system features a diverse array of content, including Hollywood blockbusters, international films (Hindi, Tamil, Sinhala, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese), popular TV series, music albums, and audio channels. Each seat is equipped with a 15.4-inch screen and access to over 100 movies, TV channels, and games. The system also includes a moving map feature, allowing passengers to track their flight in real time, which enhances the overall experience. However, the touchscreen interface can be sluggish at times, and while the selection is broad, some content may feel somewhat dated.

Screen sizes on the A330 fleet reach up to 15.4 inches (39 cm), while other models offer 9, 11, or 13-inch screens (23, 28, or 33 cm). The A330-300s are also fitted with external cameras, providing real-time views during takeoff and landing, though a tail camera is not available.

Wi-Fi connectivity is now offered on the majority of the fleet, including all A330-300s, for a reasonable fee. This allows guests to stay connected for work or leisure throughout their journey.

Amenities & Facilities

The current Business Class amenity kit is presented in collaboration with Aigner, the renowned German luxury brand. Provided on all overnight flights, the kit contains essentials such as socks, a sleep mask, lotion, a toothbrush, and earplugs. Complimentary slippers are also included for added comfort. In addition to the amenity kit, passengers receive large pillows, blankets, socks, and eye masks to enhance comfort during the flight.

Each Business Class seat is equipped with a USB charging port, allowing passengers to conveniently charge their personal devices alongside other entertainment amenities.

Lavatories in Business Class are well-stocked with quality amenities, and a travel hygiene kit is distributed on all medium- and long-haul routes as part of SriLankan’s commitment to passenger wellbeing.

While bassinets are not available in Business Class, families with children of all ages are welcome and accommodated with care, and those planning a trip may benefit from expert advice on travelling with kids in business class.

Short & Medium Haul

SriLankan Airlines operates frequent flights to India and the Maldives, leveraging its fleet of A320neo and A321neo aircraft for regional routes. Occasionally, A330s are scheduled on select short-haul flights, offering a fully flat-bed experience; however, most flights feature comfortable recliner seats.

A320, A321, and their neo variants are configured with 12 or 16 Business Class seats in a 2-2 arrangement, designed for relaxation and efficiency.

The dining and beverage service on shorter routes is adapted to the flight duration, but the airline maintains a consistently high standard in Business Class, ensuring a premium experience regardless of journey length—especially noticeable when you compare business class versus premium economy cabins.

Sustainability

SriLankan Airlines has fully integrated IATA and Airbus best practices for fuel efficiency and emissions reduction into its day-to-day operations, and remains dedicated to the oneworld and IATA NetZero2050 targets.

The airline is actively evolving its sustainability strategy, focusing on introducing eco-friendly products, optimizing the supply chain, and increasing the use of recycled and upcycled materials on board, which increasingly extends to thoughtfully designed, lower-impact business class amenity kits. Initiatives like the ‘flygreen' project and participation in carbon trading schemes underscore efforts to minimize the company's environmental impact.

SriLankan also invests in community engagement, forging lasting partnerships with schools and local organizations to support education and carbon reduction programs, reinforcing its role as a responsible corporate citizen.

Booking and Points Redemption with Lankan Airlines

Booking a seat in SriLankan Airlines business class is a straightforward process, designed to cater to both frequent flyers and those seeking a premium travel experience for a special occasion, especially if you start by searching discounted business class flights worldwide. Business class passengers can secure their tickets directly through the SriLankan Airlines website or mobile app, where the booking interface is intuitive and allows for easy selection of preferred flights, seats, and meal options. For those looking to maximize the value of their loyalty, the FlySmiLes program offers a flexible and rewarding way to earn and redeem points for business class travel.

FlySmiLes members enjoy the ability to redeem points not only on SriLankan Airlines flights but also across the extensive oneworld alliance network, including renowned partners such as American Airlines, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific, which is useful when weighing up premium economy versus economy cabins on connecting routes. This opens up a world of possibilities for business class passengers, whether planning a direct flight from London Heathrow to Colombo or connecting onward to destinations worldwide. Points can be redeemed for one-way or return flights, and there are also options to upgrade from economy to business class, making it easier to experience the comfort of the business class cabin—or alternatively to book premium economy flights as a value-focused upgrade.

When redeeming points for SriLankan Airlines business class, passengers can expect all the hallmarks of a premium journey: priority check-in at Bandaranaike International Airport, expedited security, and access to the exclusive Serendib Lounge. The business class product on the airline’s flagship Airbus A330 aircraft features lie flat beds, direct aisle access, and generous leg space, ensuring a restful journey. Onboard, the attentive cabin crew welcomes guests with hot towels, pre-departure beverages, and a choice of welcome drinks, setting the tone for the flight ahead.

The business class experience is further enhanced by thoughtful amenities, including an Aigner-branded amenity kit, a plush mattress pad for the fully flat bed, and a personal reading light for added convenience. The inflight menu showcases a variety of international and Sri Lankan dishes, complemented by a curated wine list featuring Joseph Perrier Champagne and a selection of fine spirits.

For business class passengers, the value of booking or redeeming points with SriLankan Airlines extends beyond the seat itself. Benefits such as extra baggage allowance, priority boarding, and lounge access—including the renowned Serendib Lounge—ensure a seamless and enjoyable journey from airport to arrival. Whether booking with cash or points, travelers can expect good service, a comfortable business class cabin, and a range of amenities that make SriLankan Airlines business class a compelling choice for premium travel, while some may prefer to balance comfort and budget by choosing premium economy flight deals worldwide.
