Nestled in the heart of Hampshire and just 90 minutes from London, Heckfield Place is a quintessential English country retreat that has redefined rural luxury. Set within 438 acres of meticulously preserved parkland, the estate features serene lakes, lush gardens, ancient woodlands, and a flourishing biodynamic farm where livestock and crops thrive in harmony. The 18th-century manor house, thoughtfully restored, stands as a beacon of refined hospitality, marrying heritage with contemporary excellence.

The vision for Heckfield Place is the result of an American billionaire's meticulous curation, with every element reflecting a commitment to understated opulence and exceptional guest experiences.

With only 45 individually crafted rooms and suites, the hotel ensures an atmosphere of exclusivity. The Bothy by Wildsmith, the estate’s wellness sanctuary, opened in 2023 and offers holistic spa treatments, a chemical-free infinity pool, steam room, sauna, and al fresco hot tub. Additional amenities include a state-of-the-art gym, a plush subterranean cinema, and menus curated by Michelin-starred chef Skye Gyngell, whose culinary philosophy celebrates the estate’s own seasonal bounty. Dine at Marle (proud recipient of a Michelin Green Star), experience the fire-led cuisine at Hearth, and unwind with bespoke cocktails in the atmospheric Moon Bar.

Heckfield Place’s leadership team boasts alumni from classic AMAN resorts, ensuring a level of service that is both intuitive and impeccable.

For those seeking an authentic, immersive escape into the English countryside, Heckfield Place offers an unrivalled standard of luxury and care.

Accommodation

Heckfield Place is perfectly situated in the rolling hills of Hampshire, offering a sense of seclusion while maintaining effortless access to London and major transport links. The estate is conveniently nestled between the M3 and M4, making it an ideal countryside escape for city dwellers—just under 50 miles from central London.

The hotel’s proximity to Winchfield Station—reachable in 15 minutes by taxi—facilitates smooth train journeys, and the concierge can arrange private transfers for a truly seamless arrival and departure experience.

Nearby, the picturesque village of Hartley Wintney enchants visitors with its leafy common, charming independent boutiques, and historic pubs—perfect for an afternoon wander.

For guests craving urban energy, both Reading and Basingstoke are within a short drive, offering expanded retail and cultural opportunities.

Literary aficionados will appreciate a visit to Jane Austen’s former residence in Chawton, a touchstone of local heritage and English literary history.

Heckfield Place maintains a discreet and secure environment through ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), ensuring that only registered guests enjoy access to the grounds—an extra assurance of privacy and peace.

On arrival, the attentive team swiftly handles luggage and valet parking, ensuring a smooth welcome. As a thoughtful farewell, guests receive a bespoke red leather luggage tag—a nod to the estate’s attention to detail and hospitality traditions reminiscent of AMAN.

Service & Facilities

With just 45 rooms and suites, Heckfield Place promises a highly personalized and luxurious stay. Accommodations are divided between the stately Main House and The Corridors, an elegantly understated extension, with interiors by acclaimed designer Ben Thompson—an alumnus of the renowned Ilse Crawford studio. The seamless blend of historic architecture and contemporary design ensures every space feels cohesive and inviting.

Guests can choose from five room categories, each radiating the estate’s signature warmth and sophistication. Expect tactile luxury: hand-loomed wool rugs, East Anglian rush mats, and custom ceramics that bring a gentle, sensory richness to each room.

The Signature Rooms stand out for their individuality and indulgence. Marble-clad bathrooms feature the latest Wildsmith Skin amenities, and most rooms offer deep, freestanding bathtubs for ultimate relaxation.

Every detail is considered—from the elegant presentation of tea and coffee (a Japanese-style kettle with metallic accessories in a leather pouch) to the in-room minibar, which is stocked with Skye Gyngell-selected snacks, house-made cordials, fresh-baked treats, and sparkling or still water in glass carafes. Discover hidden Champagne flutes in leather-lined drawers and kettles discreetly stowed in softly illuminated compartments—a testament to Heckfield’s pursuit of perfection.

During my stay, I was welcomed into Suite 1, "The Lake Room," a sprawling 90-square-metre sanctuary with panoramic views over the lake and grounds. The bedroom features a plush iron four-poster, abundant pillows, and intuitive lighting controls (including USB ports for convenient charging). Connectivity is excellent, with robust Wi-Fi throughout the property.

A dedicated writing desk is stocked with embossed stationery, a beautifully illustrated map, and a QR code linking to details about the estate’s significant art collection.

The ensuite bathroom is a highlight—featuring a vast walk-in shower, a soaking tub, a whimsical milking stool (now a must-have at home), twin sinks, plush towels, a live money plant, and thoughtful amenities including wool/cashmere hangers and a curated "goodie box" with high-quality personal care items.

The suite’s salon offers a dining table, large-screen TV, inviting sofas, bookshelves filled with curated reads, a bottle of Charles Heidsieck Champagne, and a complimentary minibar with fresh local beverages and sweet delights. There is also a unique tea ritual experience—an enchanting detail best discovered in person.

Heckfield’s Lake Suite is, without question, among the most memorable accommodations I have experienced.

Families are warmly welcomed: cots and extra beds are complimentary for children under four, and available for an additional fee for older children in select rooms. Marle offers a dedicated children’s menu, and the estate organises activities such as nature hunts and falconry demonstrations for young guests.

Canine companions are also catered for. For £35 per stay, dogs are provided with a plush bed, bowls, and gourmet treats in designated pet-friendly rooms. Simply inform the hotel of your dog’s name and details in advance, and they’ll ensure your pet feels as pampered as you do.

Style

Service at Heckfield Place is elevated to an art form, guided by the principle that true hospitality is intuitive, thoughtful, and deeply personal. The estate’s approach is holistic—every interaction and amenity is designed to nurture wellbeing, foster connection with nature, and create lasting memories.

The Bothy by Wildsmith stands at the heart of the wellness offering. Here, guests are gently encouraged to disconnect from devices and immerse themselves in the soothing ambience of nature—birdsong replaces notifications, and tranquility prevails. The spa’s design is a masterclass in understated luxury, with light-filled spaces, fossil-embedded limestone, and an indoor infinity pool that is free from chlorine. The glass-walled pool area opens directly onto the gardens, blurring the line between indoors and the estate’s sweeping vistas.

The Bothy features six serene treatment rooms, dual studios for fitness and movement, a steam room, and a panoramic-view sauna. Outdoor hydrotherapy options and a calendar of unique wellness experiences—such as forest bathing, iridology, cold-water immersion, and woodland movement—invite guests to reconnect with the natural world under the guidance of expert practitioners.

For the adventurous, guided wild swims in the estate’s lakes—available year-round—offer an invigorating start to the day, while the spa’s holistic therapies are tailored to individual needs for maximum rejuvenation.

Heckfield Place also offers a rich Assembly programme, featuring private cinema screenings, lectures, creative workshops, and artisan demonstrations. Whether your interests lie in astronomy, botanical crafts, or artistic pursuits, the schedule is curated to inspire and delight. Outdoor activities abound: guided garden tours, orchard walks, cycling, and bouquet-making experiences are all available, as well as classic country pursuits such as fly fishing, falconry, horseback riding at Wellington Estate, golf, and clay shooting. For those interested in spirits, the renowned Bombay Sapphire Distillery is close by.

The service ethos is shaped by a team with deep experience at the world’s top luxury resorts, including AMAN properties. Staff are attentive yet discreet, anticipating needs before they arise and ensuring every guest feels genuinely cared for—from valet parking to the smallest in-room touches.

Every aspect of your stay is crafted to enhance relaxation, foster reconnection, and celebrate the tranquil beauty of the English countryside.

The estate’s working biodynamic farm is a highlight, providing a transparent window into the origins of the hotel’s acclaimed cuisine. The farm is home to heritage breeds and seasonal produce, with greenhouses and flower beds lovingly tended throughout the year. Guests are encouraged to tour the grounds with experts like internationally renowned biodynamic farmer Jane Scotter or estate manager Peter Quinion, whose passion and knowledge bring the landscape to life.

Heckfield’s extensive art collection is another defining feature. The owner’s curated selection of modern and classic works graces every space, with QR codes offering self-guided virtual art tours for guests wishing to explore further.

Restaurants & Bars

Heckfield Place exemplifies contemporary British luxury—effortlessly sophisticated, meticulously curated, and deeply rooted in its Georgian heritage. The estate’s transformation into a leading country house hotel was a visionary undertaking led by owner Gerald Chan, who, alongside designer Ben Thompson (formerly of Studio Ilse), spent over a decade reimagining the property. The result is a seamless fusion of historic grandeur and modern comfort.

Originally the 19th-century residence of Viscount Eversley, Speaker of the House of Commons, Heckfield Place retains its stately presence—celebrated in 1859 as "a handsome mansion in a vast, wooded park." Today, that legacy is preserved and enhanced with contemporary flair.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by understated grandeur: an airy entrance hall with artisanal geometric tiles, a sweeping staircase, and a striking Persian rug beneath a grand floral arrangement. A marble fireplace anchors the space, while the interplay of materials—polished wood, soft textiles, and stone—creates an inviting, lived-in atmosphere.

No detail is overlooked. Room keys are crafted from smooth wood, fire extinguishers are finished in rose gold, and even the most practical elements blend harmoniously with the interior palette. It’s an environment where every choice, no matter how subtle, signals thoughtful luxury.

Art from Gerald Chan’s private collection is thoughtfully integrated throughout, enhancing the estate’s unique personality without overwhelming the space. The aesthetic is a refined mix of mid-century icons, bespoke contemporary pieces, vintage fabrics, and artisanal accents—curated but never contrived.

The grounds are equally captivating. Landscaped by 18th-century horticulturist William Wildsmith, the gardens feature a tranquil arboretum and a reflective lake—a legacy of the estate’s storied past as a horticultural showcase. The landscape has been carefully nurtured and expanded, offering a natural embrace around the manor house.

Ben Thompson’s interiors echo the connection to nature, with English oak furniture, handwoven rush matting from the River Ouse, and tactile, muted textiles. Tapestries by Lucy Bathurst, velvet cushions, and custom ceramic lighting add depth and character, ensuring every room feels warm and inviting.

Heckfield Place stands apart for its quiet confidence. Here, luxury is expressed through exquisite craftsmanship, intelligent design, and a profound respect for history. The effect is timeless—a space that feels both grand and deeply personal, inviting guests to unwind and linger.

Sustainability

Gastronomy at Heckfield Place is a celebration of the estate’s natural bounty and the rhythm of the seasons. Under the guidance of Michelin-starred chef Skye Gyngell, dining here is an immersive farm-to-table experience where each dish reflects the freshest produce from the biodynamic farm, kitchen gardens, and orchards.

Marle, the estate’s flagship restaurant and recipient of a Green Michelin Star, epitomizes sustainable fine dining. Its glass-walled, sun-drenched dining room provides the ideal backdrop for a menu that evolves daily based on the harvest. Signature dishes might include creamy taleggio risotto with walnuts or estate-reared lamb with kohlrabi and black garlic vinaigrette, all highlighting the quality and provenance of the ingredients.

Hearth, a guest-exclusive dining room set in a converted stable, centres on wood-fired cooking. The open flame infuses every plate with a unique smokiness, encouraging guests to share generous portions of grilled seafood, whole fish, and succulent meats, as well as inventive vegetarian options like stuffed squash and peppers. The partnership with local grower Fern Verrow ensures the kitchen has access to the finest organic produce year-round.

During my recent stay, Hearth hosted a special dinner by acclaimed chef Jackson Boxer, renowned for his innovative approach at Orosay and Henri. Guests enjoyed a memorable menu featuring estate-grown vegetables and signature flame-grilled chicken, all prepared over the open fire.

For cocktails, the Moon Bar provides a moody, intimate setting with expert mixologists crafting creative drinks using estate-grown botanicals and premium spirits. The ambiance is seductive and sophisticated, ideal for winding down after dinner or enjoying a late-night conversation.

Breakfast at Heckfield Place is a la carte, with offerings ranging from wholesome banana and rye bread to vibrant courgette fritters with feta and a perfectly fried egg. On sunny mornings, the terrace becomes an idyllic spot for al fresco dining, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the English countryside.

Exclusively for Bothy guests, the Sunroom Café offers light, nourishing fare throughout the day—a tranquil haven for post-spa relaxation.

Skye Gyngell’s culinary vision, deeply rooted in the principles of sustainability and seasonality, is evident in every aspect of the dining experience. Menus are dictated by the day’s harvest, with each plate telling the story of the land. Dishes such as curd-cheese dumplings with autumn greens or guinea fowl with elderberry syrup illustrate the kitchen’s inventive, ingredient-led approach. Desserts, like almond cake with honeyed walnut ice cream, are equally inspired by what the gardens and orchards yield.

Guests seeking informal moments can gather at fire pits overlooking the lake for sundowners—a perfect spot to watch the sun set over the estate’s rolling lawns.

Dining at Heckfield Place is more than a meal—it’s a curated journey from field to fork, where every bite is imbued with the spirit of the estate and the artistry of the kitchen.

What We Love

Sustainability is woven into every facet of Heckfield Place’s philosophy, informing both daily operations and long-term strategy. The estate’s commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in its certified biodynamic market garden and organic farm, which supply the hotel’s kitchens with hyper-local, seasonal produce. This closed-loop system not only minimizes food miles but also ensures guests enjoy dishes made from the freshest ingredients, harvested mere steps from their table.

Beyond cultivated fields, Heckfield Place preserves and regenerates ancient woodlands, actively supporting local biodiversity and planting new trees to safeguard the landscape for generations to come. The estate’s zero-waste pledge is rigorously upheld: kitchen waste is composted or repurposed, single-use plastics have been eliminated, and glass and ceramic containers are sourced from regional artisans. Plans are underway to expand the use of sustainable materials, including a forthcoming glass-blowing studio to further reduce environmental impact.

Renewable energy is increasingly prioritized, and all bath amenities are locally produced, combining luxury with a reduced carbon footprint and community support.

Recognition of these pioneering efforts is reflected in Marle’s Green Michelin Star and industry accolades for Heckfield’s holistic approach to sustainability. The estate’s environmental initiatives are continually evolving, positioning it as a leader among luxury hotels embracing regenerative hospitality.

Guests are encouraged to learn about and participate in the estate’s green practices, from farm tours to educational workshops, deepening their appreciation for the hotel’s deep-rooted respect for nature and commitment to a sustainable future.
