With twenty lavish Junior Lodge Suites and two ultra-private multi-bedroom residences, the estate is enveloped in seven hectares (17 acres) of meticulously landscaped parkland, ensuring tranquility and exclusivity.

Consistently ranked among the most prestigious luxury lodges globally, Huka Lodge provides guests with privileged access to nature and a curated array of experiences. On the grounds, guests enjoy tennis, pétanque, cycling, croquet, and a range of in-suite spa therapies. Private yoga sessions and tennis coaching are available upon request. The Lodge boasts a heated swimming pool and multiple spa pools. For those seeking adventure beyond the property, activities range from fly fishing, jet boating, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding to white-water rafting. Land-based pursuits include hiking (with heli-hiking options), mountain biking, championship golf, and even bungy jumping. The legendary Huka Falls are a short stroll away, and opportunities to immerse in Māori culture abound.

Dining at Huka Lodge is a celebration of place, whether in the intimate setting of the main lodge or at one of the lodge’s unique alfresco venues—such as the atmospheric Wine Cellar, the Orchard, or the Jetty Pavilion. Signature cocktails, fine wines, and rare spirits are served in The Bar and the relaxed Lodge Lounge.

Accommodation

Nestled in a landscape where snow-dusted peaks meet wild grasslands, lush forests, and the crystalline waters of lakes and rivers, Huka Lodge occupies a privileged position on the banks of the Waikato River—the country’s longest. The river cascades over the thunderous Huka Falls, just north of Taupō, a town perched on the edge of New Zealand’s largest lake and renowned for its geothermal wonders and rejuvenating hot springs.

International travelers typically arrive via Auckland Airport. From there, a brief stroll connects you to the domestic terminal for the 45-minute flight to Taupō Airport, with Air New Zealand operating multiple daily services. Complimentary transfers between Taupō Airport and the Lodge are provided for guests’ convenience.

For a truly memorable arrival, opt for a scenic helicopter transfer. The 70-minute flight delivers guests directly to the Lodge’s private helipad, just steps away from their accommodation.

Taupō Airport is also equipped to receive private jets by prior arrangement, catering to discerning travelers seeking utmost privacy.

For those preferring to drive, Taupō is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours from Auckland, 4.5 to 5 hours from Wellington, and just an hour from Rotorua—famous for its geothermal marvels and distinctive sulphur aroma.

Now, the property stands as one of New Zealand’s most celebrated luxury lodges. The Alan Pye and Alex van Heeren Cottages are named in honor of the visionary founder and one of the Lodge’s key architects, respectively. Huka Lodge is widely credited as a pioneer in the country’s luxury lodge movement, setting the standard for others to follow.

The interiors, curated by acclaimed New Zealand designer Virginia Fisher, exude understated elegance, while landscape architect Suzanne Turley has shaped lush gardens that seamlessly integrate with the surrounding environment.

Huka Lodge’s deep connection to its natural setting is palpable, attracting royalty, celebrities, and discerning travelers seeking restoration. In an era where meaningful, immersive experiences are prized, the Lodge offers a transformative escape—one that fosters a profound sense of peace and reconnection with the world’s raw beauty.

The main Lodge Restaurant is the social and culinary heart of Huka Lodge. Guests are treated to breakfast as morning mist drifts over the river, light lunches at midday, and elegant evening meals by candlelight. For those seeking a more intimate atmosphere, a selection of private dining settings—including the Wine Cellar, Orchard, Trophy Room, Green Room, and Jetty Pavilion—offers unique ambiances for memorable meals.

Executive Chef Paul Froggatt crafts seasonal menus that celebrate New Zealand’s bounty, blending classical European techniques with the country’s finest organic and free-range produce. The daily-changing five-course dinner might feature delicacies such as Te Matuku oysters, Matangi beef, Mount Cook Alpine salmon, and Southland lamb, all paired with freshly baked breads and expertly curated wines.

The Bar at Huka Lodge showcases a selection of premium spirits, many sourced from New Zealand’s burgeoning craft distilleries, ideal for bespoke cocktails and classic drinks. Oenophiles will delight in the Lodge’s Wine Cellar, which houses more than 4,500 bottles, making it a destination in its own right. After dinner, the Lodge Lounge offers a refined setting for a nightcap and reflection.

What We Love

Huka Lodge is a leader in sustainable luxury, integrating a holistic approach to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and responsible operations. Central to the Lodge’s ethos are initiatives to safeguard the Waikato River’s purity and ensure the longevity of its natural resources. In recent years, Huka Lodge has invested in advanced water monitoring and purification systems, guaranteeing that all water used on property meets spring-quality standards, while a state-of-the-art wastewater plant allows for the irrigation of the Lodge’s extensive gardens using recycled water.

Gardens are tended using chemical-free methods, encouraging biodiversity and providing vital habitats for birds, bees, and native wildlife.

Energy efficiency is prioritized through recycling programs, solar power initiatives, and the installation of electric vehicle charging stations. Items such as batteries, printer cartridges, and coffee pods are carefully recycled as part of the Lodge’s ongoing efforts to minimize waste.
