Review of The Hay-Adams

Location

Steeped in history and named for illustrious Washingtonians John Hay and Henry Adams, The Hay-Adams is a landmark property whose legacy dates back to its 1928 debut as a grand residential hotel. The building’s Italian Renaissance exterior, adorned with intricate Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian detailing, immediately signals its architectural pedigree.

Today, this storied address stands out for offering the most coveted White House vistas in the capital. With 124 refined guestrooms and 21 suites, two destination restaurants, an exclusive private dining salon for up to 20, an awe-inspiring rooftop event venue, a modern fitness center, valet services, and a Tesla Destination Charger, The Hay-Adams masterfully blends tradition and innovation. The property is also renowned for its Author Series, an ongoing literary event celebrating culture and dialogue.

In a city flush with luxury brands, The Hay-Adams remains fiercely independent, delivering an elevated level of personalized service and meticulous attention to detail that sets it apart.

Fittingly, the hotel’s motto is: “Where nothing is overlooked but the White House.”

Discover why The Hay-Adams ranks among the finest luxury hotels in Washington D.C.

Accommodation

Positioned in the very heart of downtown Washington D.C., The Hay-Adams boasts an unrivaled address—directly opposite the White House, just across Lafayette Square. The National Mall is four blocks away, with the U.S. Capitol located approximately one mile from the hotel. Guests will find themselves surrounded by major business, government, and cultural institutions, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the historic St. John’s Church, famously known as the “Church of the Presidents.”

Exploring the city is effortless: guests can stroll or borrow one of the hotel’s bicycles, taking advantage of the dedicated bike lane right outside. This scenic route winds past Washington’s most celebrated museums and monuments. Farragut North Metro station is a convenient five-minute walk, while a leisurely 20-minute walk brings you to the Washington Monument and the acclaimed Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

The Hay-Adams is easily accessible from all major airports: just 9.7 km (six miles) or a 15-minute drive from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, 40 km (25 miles) or 45 minutes by car from Washington Dulles International Airport, and around 50 km (31 miles) or about an hour from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

Service & Facilities

The Hay-Adams offers a truly residential ambiance, where no two rooms are identical due to the building’s unique historic layout. This creates an atmosphere more akin to an elegant private residence than a conventional hotel, while still providing every contemporary amenity expected by today’s discerning luxury traveler.

Interiors are finished in soothing, neutral tones—think sage and soft espresso—elevated by custom textiles, toile canopied beds, bespoke draperies, striped wallcoverings, curated black-and-white photography, and intricate plasterwork. Select accommodations feature fireplaces, French doors, or Juliet balconies, adding to the sense of individuality and charm.

Bathrooms evoke vintage glamour with brass fixtures, Etro bath amenities, and plush Italian linens. Every guestroom is equipped with a large HD flat-screen TV with Google Chromecast, Bose SoundLink Bluetooth speakers, ample charging ports, digital climate control, and in-room safes sized for laptops. For families, iPads, DVD players, children’s board games, and more can be provided upon request.

Rates vary by room size and view. Entry-level rooms are intimate and overlook the tranquil courtyard, while Executive Studios offer additional space. Many rooms gaze out over St. John’s Church, Lafayette Park, or—at the uppermost levels—the White House itself.

The hotel’s 21 suites preserve their historic splendor with ornate ceilings and decorative fireplaces, and can be expanded with connecting bedrooms. Lafayette Park View Junior Suites and White House View Junior Suites occupy the top floors, while St. John’s Church View Suites feature a spacious master, separate living area, luxurious bath with double vanity, and soaking tub. Lafayette Park View Suites add an elegant dining table for private meals or meetings.

The Presidential Suite offers panoramic views of the White House, Lafayette Park, and St. John’s Church, with the option for one or two bedrooms, as well as a gracious living room and dual bathrooms. The Federal Suite, also customizable for one or two bedrooms, boasts a separate living space, two full baths, and French doors opening to a private balcony with direct White House views.

Nine accessible rooms are available, thoughtfully designed for guests with disabilities.

Style

Located on the second floor, the state-of-the-art Fitness Center features premium Matrix cardio machines, free weights, multifunctional benches, and an array of equipment to suit every workout regimen. Changing rooms and showers are available for guest convenience.

The Hay-Adams Author Series pays homage to the property’s literary roots, reviving the tradition of vibrant intellectual salons that once animated the original Hay and Adams residences. Since its inception, the series has welcomed renowned writers, Pulitzer Prize winners, and thought leaders, continuing to foster dialogue and cultural exchange. Recent speakers have included luminaries such as Doris Kearns Goodwin, David McCullough, Simon Schama, Isabel Allende, and John Grisham.

Families are warmly embraced, with a thoughtful array of children’s amenities: custom menus, activity backpacks, puzzles, plush toys, scavenger hunt maps, rain gear, and junior bathrobes. The culinary team is delighted to prepare special treats for young guests, ensuring every family member feels like a VIP.

Guests can also explore the city on complimentary Shinola bicycles—crafted by the esteemed Detroit company and regarded as the pinnacle of American cycling. Helmets, locks, and city maps are provided by the hotel’s attentive concierge team.

Restaurants & Bars

If staying at the White House is unattainable, The Hay-Adams offers the next best thing. This was the preferred residence for the Obama family ahead of their inauguration, underscoring its reputation as the city’s premier address for dignitaries and statesmen.

Blending rich heritage with contemporary sophistication, the hotel exudes understated luxury and warmth. Renowned designer Thomas Pheasant’s vision has refreshed the interiors, balancing modern comfort with the building’s historic character and creating a welcoming, residential feel.

The celebrated Top of the Hay rooftop venue offers panoramic city views and is a sought-after setting for exclusive events and weddings. Its cinematic backdrop has even graced major television productions, adding to its allure.

The Hay-Adams’ legacy of impeccable service and attention to detail has attracted legendary guests such as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. The hotel has consistently set industry benchmarks, such as pioneering air-conditioned dining spaces as early as the 1930s.

For those seeking authentic style and refined ambiance, The Hay-Adams delivers in abundance—an enduring icon of luxury and taste.

Sustainability

With sweeping views of Lafayette Square and The White House, The Lafayette stands as the hotel’s signature dining destination, offering contemporary American cuisine crafted from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Its airy, light-filled dining room, framed by expansive windows, provides an elegant setting for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.

For a quintessential D.C. experience, Off the Record bar is a must-visit. Known for its discreet yet vibrant atmosphere, this intimate venue is adorned with caricatures of political figures past and present, and its signature coasters—featuring satirical portraits of politicians and judges—have become sought-after collector’s items, available for purchase via the hotel’s website. Deep red banquettes, plush armchairs, and whimsical décor create a welcoming retreat for Washington insiders and guests alike.

The bar serves a curated menu of light fare alongside expertly crafted cocktails, making it an ideal spot for both informal meetings and evening rendezvous. Powerbrokers and travelers mingle here, savoring the unique blend of history, exclusivity, and culinary excellence.

What We Love

As a revered historic hotel, The Hay-Adams is at the forefront of sustainable hospitality in Washington, D.C. The property’s stewardship ethos centers on energy conservation and environmental responsibility, with a dynamic approach to reducing its carbon footprint year over year.

Currently, over 25% of the hotel’s electricity is sourced from renewable providers, and single-use plastics and Styrofoam have been eliminated. The culinary team prioritizes organic and locally sourced produce, partnering exclusively with vendors who share a commitment to sustainable practices. More than 80% of white paper used in administrative operations is recycled, and a comprehensive "no print" policy encourages digital communication across all departments. Housekeeping exclusively utilizes eco-friendly cleaning products, and when redecorating, the team avoids any oil-based paints. A single-stream recycling program is in place for guest room waste, including paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum.

The Hay-Adams also participates in a linen recycling initiative with Keys for the Homeless, supporting the local community by donating gently used linens and amenities to those in need.
